General diagnostics

When you get fault codes they are the worst, but here are a few tips on doing your own diagnostics at home. The equipment that you will need is pretty basic and do not generally cost much and you can make a few yourself. I like to have at least 3 jumper wires, a test light, and a digital multimeter.

Multimeter:
This is a basic model and can go for anywhere from $15-$30 USD
Test Light:
This is the best way for checking continuity on just about any motor or sensor.
Jumper Wires:
These are just about essential for transferring power over a suspicious relay or fuse.

A lot of the times users ask us on our website about the best way to check if a relay is bad or if a component is faulty. With a jumper wire and a test light at your side they can ultimately find your trouble.

How to use a Test Light;
Test lights are useful, but they can be harmful too, that's why knowing what and how to do with then is important. test lights generally just jump a power source and illuminate a bulb. this is useful, however you can also short a circuit with one or send too much voltage to a resistor (sensor) also. that is why using a test light to check continuity of a 12v circuit is basically all you can do with it, but that is more then enough in most cases.
When using a test light connect the clamp to a good known ground and touch the probe to the component that is suspected of being shorted to ground. if the light comes on then you know that the component is grounded. Therefore you have continuity. No light no power. you can also test for typical short by clamping the test light to the battery positive and testing grounds.

How to use a multimeter;
The multimeter has been around for about 40 or so years and since electronic fuel injection had become the modern technicians "go to" tool for all kinds of check engine and short circuit issues.The models vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but al do the same thing and that is tell you whether or not there is the right resistance and good voltages coming into and out of sensors, motors, and batteries.

How to use Jumper Wires;
Jumper wires are easy to make and even simpler to utilize. they basically are used to test whether or not relays, fuse links, and circuits for bad lines receiving power or whether or not there is power going to the component in question.

I have a Buick le sabre 1994 every time I put a blue 15 fuse in it, it blows right there in my hands so the interior light are out and the rear lights won't stay on unless using the brakes and when th

you have a short in this circuit, it must be repaired before you stick that fuse in. a wiring diagram is how you can trace that circuit, testing each wire for continuity, or a short, is the only way to find your problem.

Hi Dorin, you have a hard/dead short that should be easy to find generally they are the easiest. Time to get out your test light and start tracking the wire from the power side of the switch, circuit breaker or the blown fuse receiver, when the test light quits lighting you are very close to your short. Short circuit in Stratoliner passing lamps

Hi, Doug you have a dead short which is usually the easiest to find. Using a test light connected to the hot side of the blown fuse holder, start probing the wire leaving the fuse holder about an inch away from the test light should illuminate, keep probing towards the ignition switch until the test light no longer illuminates you are now very close to the short. My BRAND NEW Reebok 2.2 Motorised Treadmill Trips the electrics when swithced on. What is causing this? :(

See my block diagram for treadmill and see the fuse.
1) This ocurre for varios reason a) test the swicht power for short circuit.
2) the capacitor shor 3) the coil is short 4) the board is short.5) The power cord some wires is touche the carcase from treadmill, or some other wires inside is touching , test it
Now you must isolate the short with DVOM.
God bless you

I was using my Horizon Treadmill T1201, and in the middle of my workout my circuit breaker was tripped and lost power in my room. When I got power back, i turned on my treadmill and it reads a 5101 error...

Dear Sir:
You have a big SHORT CIRCUIT inside from your machine.

1) Test the input voltage and see the c. breaker reset 2) Test the fuse inside with your DVOM. 3) See if some wires is loose and tight 4) See if there are some component burn 5) Test the input voltage motor, if there are the motor is faulty 6) Test the output voltage for input voltage motor is there are NOT the board is FAULTY.

Of course you must sHURE the outlet from wall is o.k test the ground wires,and see any loose wires, or touching between them. DO NOT USE ANY EXTENSION CORD for your treadmill.

sincerely. God bless you

I haven't started my bike in almost 1 year. The starter does not even turn engine. I replaced battery and lights work. No noise at all when I press starter.

i have a 2007 gt250r and had a similar problem, on the right side beside the battery between the fairing and the frame is the starter solenoid, you can test it with a test light by putting the clamp of the test light on one side then the light on the other side, hit the starter button if the light doesnt come on it is the solenoid, about $50 off ebay

I am trying to replace the right front turn signal assembly. The new assembly I bought from j & p has a red wire and a black wire. The product description says it is dual filament. However, the...

Your new assembly may be internal grounded for a common wire. Take it over to your car battery, touch the base/mount to the negative post and touch one wire at a time to the positive post. The light should light, you should have one brighter than the other, as you touch one wire then the other. Then touch both at same time it should be bright. If this new light works like this, then, pull the bike wires out and away from any metal and apart from each other. Use a 12v test light or the new light (be sure the base is touching metal) and test for wire to wire connection. Turn the bike on, turn on the lights, match up which wire is hot to the dimmer light. Then turn on the signal and match that wire to the brighter light. The other wire can be connected to the base of the new assy. or tape it off and leave it covered. Hope this helps Fix Ya up.
