There is a short circuit in the wire to teh gauge. When you short out the Sending unit the gauge will read FULL. look for a wire with the insulation worn off

My gas gage reads empty but stays lit up on 2005flht

The fuel gauge sender is mounted internally in the fuel tank. There is a three pin connector that will have a Yellow/White wire in it (the middle wire) under the center console. This is the sender wire. Connect an ohm meter between this wire and the black wire and check for the following readings:
If fuel tank is full, the reading should be 7-14 ohms. An empty tank should have a 74-95 ohm resistance. A half full tank will be approximately 30-38 ohms.
If you ground this wire that comes from the harness, the fuel gauge should read full. If not, then fault may be in wiring or the fuel gauge itself.
Remove the front fairing to gain access to the gauge. You should have 12 volts across the orange/white and black wires. If not, check accessory fuse. If 12 volts present ground the yellow/white wire at the gauge. Gauge should read full scale. If not, gauge faulty. If gauge reads full scale, check wiring from gauge to three pin plug under tank console.

1998 chevrolet astro van/fuel gauge always stays on full

Usually a sign of a faulty sending unit in the tank.
A mechanic would ground the wire to the sender to see if the gauge moves.

My fuel gauge floats from full to empty when I stop at a light! And its stays on empty until I drive for about five minute why is that? I can't get an accurate fuel reading!!

I have the same vehicle and my car actually was full of gas, registered empty & left me on the side of the road..It was the sensor in the fuel line that had to be replaced.

2001 harley electra glide fuel gauge stays on full

Hi Tim, always check your instrument fuses first also you could have a faulty sending unit or guage, there could be a problem with your wiring. On models with the fuel gauge posing as a left hand fuel cap the gauge is a press fit do not try to unscrew it, simply ample force lift up in a rocking motion to remove gauge. Disconnect wires to the gauge and with a set of positive and negative jumpers from the battery connect the positive jumper and flash the negative, gauge should peg full, if not replace gauge. With a test light check for power to the sending unit, then remove the sending unit and manually operate the float arm slowly with the correct wiring hooked up to the fuel gauge and sending unit and the ignition on, the gauge should respond accordingly if not replace the float arm assembly. I have a 2003 GMC Envoy and my gas gauge has been flowing up and down to empty and full recently it has stayed on empty. How do I fix it?

Ensure that all of the wire connections are clean, secure and corrosion-free.

  • 2 Check your fuel gauge fuse if the gauge's indicator stays on empty when your turn on the ignition. If the fuse is good, join the sending unit connector to ground. Replace the sending unit if the gauge indictor moves to the full line.
  • 3 Ground the terminal located on the back of the fuel gauge with a jumper wire if the indicator doesn't move. If it does move, consider replacing the wire between the fuel gauge and the sending unit. A poor ground is frequently responsible for fuel gauge problems.
  • 4 Release the wire that connects to the fuel tank's sending unit. Confirm that there's no worn insulation that would permit wire contact to the body or frame. A fuel gauge reading of full generally indicates a problem with the tank unit, not the wiring.

Gas gauge goes past full when you turn on

Could be a short to ground on the positive wire leading from the fuel sender.

Ford thunderbird fuel gauge stays on full

More than likely it is the sending unit inside the fuel tank. You will need to remove the fuel tank and take the sending unit out of the tank and replace it.
