Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTC - FLHTCI Electra Glide classic

Voltage dips below 10, battery & engine light comes on

This happens when I am sitting at a light. When I take off and up to speed, volts go up to 14, but drop to just about 12 when let off throttle

SOURCE: My 06 Ultra Glide has a spike from 10-14 volts

Check plug on front of engine where charging system plugs in. Faulty plug connection possible.

SOURCE: voltage reulator puts out 14 volts and engine

It sounds like the voltage regulator is doing what it is supposed to. The charging system should put out between 14-15 volts when the battery is fully charged in your bike.

Now what is causing your engine light to come on is beyond me.

tthe regualtor in the alternator is damaged or at least one of its diodes , so when it ghets hot it fails, replace your alternator.

My dash lights go dim at night


Have you tried adjusted the dimmer switch??Some other things to check are your grounds and the charging system.The ground between the engine block and firewall/chassis is the ground for the interior & exterior lights so make sure its tight and corrosion free.
The next thing you should do is conduct a full charging system test. Here’s how to do your own.
Connect a digital volt meter to the battery terminals. A fully charged battery should read about 12.7-volts. Start the engine. The reading should jump to around 13.5 volts. Leave the engine running and turn the blower motor to HIGH. The reading should dip down and then rebound back to 13.5 or more volts. Leave the blower on and turn on the headlights. It’ll dip again and rebound. Then turn on the rear defroster grid. Next, sit and watch the meter for about 10 minutes with the engine running and all those accessories on full blast. If the voltage stays the same at 13.5 or higher, the charging system is fine. A weak alternator will start pulling the voltage down in small increments because it can’t keep up with the electrical drain.

Nothing wrong with altenator nor battery but want keep a charge


Disconnect battery when not in use and see if it will start if you connect it back up just before you need to use it. If it works something is draining battery.

Intermittent alternator


Hi Denny, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12 volts or better after charging.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.

8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor. Good luck

P1687 code


Code 1684 is not on the list for Chrysler cars, code 1687 is for the battery voltage dropping below 10 volts. This can occur if the voltage actually does drop below 10 or if the battery is disconnected from the computer.
It could be a wiring problem between the key switch and the main fuse box.

Why do the lights flicker when trying to turn over the engine?


The battery is low on charge. Either the battery is failing or your alternator is not putting out enough charge or the starter motor is drawing too much electricity. If you have a volt ohm meter you can check the all of these conditions. Simply by connecting the VOM to the battery. Your battery should have a static charge of about 12.5 volts. When you try to start the engine the voltage on the meter should not drop below 10 volts..If you have the engine running the voltage should come up to about 14.4 volts within 2 minutes. If it doesn't come above 14 volts there is a problem with your alternator.

When trying to start the car the engine won't even try to turn over. All you hear is a few quite clicks. Battery is working (all the lights come on, can turn on the radio ect.). Any help appreciated.


Make sure the battery cables are tight to the posts. The starter takes alot more current than the headlights and will require more tight of a connection.

5 to 10 minutes after the sensor triggers my headlights on, my headlights go out and my gauges on my dash begin to jump up every couple seconds. There is a clicking sound when it happens and my lights dim...


Check your battery connections and do a voltage test to battery with engine running lights off, then check with lights on. You need a minimum of 12.5 volts but should have 13-14 volts even with lights.

500.1 amp power lights blinks on and off

Status Indicator Lights / Protection Circuitry
There are three status indicator lights on the top of the amplifier. These are as follows:1) "Power" (Green): lights to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
2) "Thermal" (Red): lights to indicate that the amplifier has exceeded its safe operating temperature, putting the amplifier into a self-protection mode, which reduces the power output of the amplifier. The red light will shut off and the amplifier will return to normal, full-power operating mode if the heat sink temperature drops back to a safe level.
3) "Low ω" (Amber): lights to indicate that the impedance of the speaker load connected to the amplifier is lower than the optimum impedance load range for the amplifier. When this light is on, a protection circuit engages and reduces the power output of the amplifier. The amber indicator will also light when a short-circuit is detected in the speaker wiring (this can be a short between the positive and negative speaker wires or between either speaker wire and the vehicle chassis).
There is only one condition that will shut down an undamaged 500/1v2 completely… If battery voltage drops below 10 volts, the entire amplifier will shut itself off. The green "Power" indicator on the top of the amplifier will turn off when this occurs. The amplifier will turn back on when voltage climbs back above 10 volts. This may happen in a rapid cycle when bass-heavy program material causes a weak charging system to dip below 10 volts momentarily. If this is happening in your system, have your charging system inspected to make sure it is working properly.
For information on troubleshooting this amplifier, refer to Appendix E (page 21).

Amp protection light comes on when raising volume...


It sounds like you either have too low of an ohm load or the voltage is dropping at the amplifier's power terminal.

With your multimeter set to DC volts, the black meter lead on the ground terminal of the amp and the head unit on (so the amp will have remote voltage applied), touch the red lead alternately to the B+ and remote terminals of the amp. If the voltage is below ~11 volts, you need to check the wiring feeding whichever line is too low.


If the voltage remains near or above 12v, disconnect one speaker and see if it shuts down. If it doesn't, disconnect that speaker and connect the other speaker. If it only shuts down with both speakers connected and the voltage is staying above 12v, the ohm load is probably too low and you'll need to rewire the speakers.
