Is your clutch dragging or putting a load on the engine?

Does it rev fine? You make want to pull the spark plug wires off one at a time and see if the engine running changes. My guess is you are not fireing on all cylnders. Be careful about pulling them off while it's running because you can get a nice jolt. Make sure to wear rubber gloves.

If the engine dies as soon as you put the bike in gear (without jerking), I suspect a faulty sidestand switch. I would attempt to disconnect the wires at the switch and tie them together to test my theory.

Do you have the kickstand down? It is designed to stall if it is running in gear unless the kickstand is up.

You should check your side stand switch, this will kill the motor

I have a honda VTX 1300 that has a 5 speed transmission. I only count 4 when Im shifting. 1 down and 3 up.

Let me see, 1 down = 1st gear, 1 up = 2nd gear, 2 up = 3rd gear, 3 up = 4th gear, 4 up = 5th gear.
See, easy.

if you are able to select gears without the motor stalling I doubt that your clutch is burned I would suspect that you may have sheared the output shaft in the gearbox this is a major job & without the correct tools & knowledge should be entrusted to a qualified technician

Backfiring on deceleration from exhaust pipes

May be running too lean or too rich. Check the color of your plugs, black dry and sooty means they are rich, white with blisters lean.

VTX 1300R 07 ran out of gas and won't start, put fuel in it.

Does your bike have a petcock?

If so you have to prime the fuel bowls with gas by opening the pet **** for a minute until the fuel bowls are full of fuel THEN you set your choke if you have a manual choke THEN start the bike.

My 2005 Honda VTX 1300R has new battery, starts fine, accel good but idles rough sometimes to the point of stalling

Make sure the choke is pushed ALL the way in. If you've been using it, you may have fouled the plugs.

Battery access

Battery is under the seat. There is little room for you to add a charger, as such, shy of getting such a charger recommended by your Honda shop designed for such.

It is probably better if you start your bike once each week and let it run. This will keep fresh gas in the carb and your battery charged up during these difficult months of winter.
