Are you turning the tap the right way as it sounds like you are running on the reserve tank all the time and when you turn over the tank is already empty.

Reserve fuel tank question...

Check that fuel valve, pull out that output fuel hose, turn the valve to "reserve", if fuel flows, that means it works( fuel valve ), if no fuel flows, that valve has STUCK valve flow.

Most bike problem is in that fuel valve.

Hope that helps!

What is the gas mileage on this bike that holds 4.2 gallons? Also, how do i activate the reserve tank? Just bought this bike and didn't get a manual with it. How many miles can i ride before i need an...

You didn't say what size Star you had.
Mileage for the 650 is listed at 47mpg ---for the 1100 42.8mpg

The indicator on the petcock valve should have a P & R on it--- P, is primary, R is reserve. It's a simple design, with 2 different length pickups on it. So if you can't read the lettering on the valve. remove the fuel line going to the carbs. when your tank is low on fuel--- And you can determine how to set it. The pickup for the reserve gas will be on the back, or looking at it, right side of the valve.

The owners manual states to change oil every 4000 miles and filter every 8000
Personally, i change BOTH every 3000 miles. Clean oil is the key to keeping a V-twin engine happy and running for many miles. SAE 20w50 synthetic is what i use. I believe the manual calls for 20w40, which is fine for break in and while the bike is under warranty.
The choice is yours.

The Clymer service manual, is a handy tool to have. I recommend you get one. Ebay is a good place to find them along with Amazon....

I hope this helps & good luck with your Star...these are good bikes.

A/C works great except.... I'll have the A/C on MAX where it blows air out the vents. When I accelerate, where the engine is pulling a little harder, like up a hill at 65mph, the air will stop flowing...

Most cars & trucks have a vacuum reserve tank under the hood for this problem, some look like a round ball or a can with vacuum hoses going to it, check and make sure it don't have a hole in it, if the take is ok you could add an extra tank to give more reserve vacuum, or if you don't have a tank you can add one.

I just want to know how many miles can you travel on your reserve tank of petrol

Make this simple: How much gas is only avaiable to the reserve: What's your "economy" MPG? (We ALWAYS slow down when we are running on reserve, don't we?) MPG x reserve = milel drivable until final sputter.

Bought my v-star 'previously enjoyed'. no manual. please advise positions for reserve tank switch...i'd really rather not have to figure out by actual experience! thanx

Down is "on", forward is "off", up is "reserve". Mine will travel 170 miles on a tank and an additional 30 miles on reserve. Any more questions....

I have a 99 Mercury Sable Wagon that keeps boiling the radiator fluid out of the reserve tank. The temp gauge isn't reading hot, though. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds to me like a blown head gasket. Even if your vehicle is not warmed up, if your reserve tank is boiling fluid out of it when the engine is cool, it's most likely losing compression from it all going to your reserve tank. And thats why it's fluids coming out of your reserve tank. BUT, if your radiator is clogged then the same thing could happen. So i would start out cheap before you have to replace a HG. In my lancruiser series 80 the Fuel tank light is permanently on & I am unable to transfer fuel from reserve tank to main tank. What does this mean. Thanks

This may not help or you have probably already looked at this.
Some times they put a manual fuel switch under the drivers seat to swap from main tank to reserve it might pay to have a look.
good luck
