I think on your bike you will have an Electronic Speedo. As suggested by wd4ity, the sensor can result in the speedo failure. This is a hall effect device and is magnetic. It can pick up metal fragments from inside the gearbox. Removal of the sensor is a bit fiddly. Its located on top of the gearbox just below the starter. Take it out and clear any metal debris. If not the sensor, and you get to the point of replacing the speedo, be careful! After 2004 the Electronic Speedo completely change and is not compatible with pre-2004 models (I found that out the hard way). Hope that helps. Best of luck!

I can hear a lot of valve train noise, carried it back at 1000 miles. HD said bike sounded good, but sure they would. 09 evo 1200.

Hi Anonymous, find a friend who also has a fairly late model XL 1200 and swap bikes and go for a ride for an hour or so, then you will know for sure and so will the guy/gal riding your bike. Also you can try running SYN 3 Harley oil it runs cooler than non-syn also run an oil cooler. Engine oil temp should be around 180 to 220. The cooler the engine the quieter the moving parts to a point. Good luck

2001 xl 1200 Sportster Run and when it warms up it shuts down, after it cools down it will start again and run fine and when it warms up it shuts down again.

Check the cam sensor in the nose cone on the right side of the engine. Due to heating cycles, the epoxy melts over time and the wires don't make contact. Pretty sure replacing it will solve your problem,. You will have to time the bike after replacing the sensor, though.

Type your problem for a solution...engine backfires at sall speeds.

It's still too lean. Check the timing, too. Don't use old fuel, does this bike use high test?

Recently purchased a sportster 1200 xl low rider 06 plate. Which is great in every way apart from town use, I find that once the engine has got warm I am having to continually blip the throttle to stop it...

Regrettably, it is a "norm" for an H-D Sportster but it's fixable. The engine is jetted very lean in order to meet EPA emission standards. The lean mixture is what causes the spitting back through the carburetor and poor idle qualities of the engine. You can improve the low speed and idling characteristics of your engine by going up one size on the low speed jet and readjusting the idle mixture. If you can do this work yourself, let me know and I'll give you the instructions on how to do it. If not, take your bike to a performance oriented shop and talk to them about it. If they have a dynometer and an exhaust gas analyzer, they can fine tune your bike to where it runs like it should.

Where do I find the fuse block on a 2011 XL1200C?

Hmmm, good question. Since I don't work on the late model bikes, I'm not sure. Usually on Sportys, the fuse panel is behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike or under the seat.

Just need to know where the drain plug is on 2003 1200 sportster-friend lost her manual

For the oil? On the oil tank you will see tubes coming off the bottom of the tank, there is two one to the motor and one will drop almost straight down. follow the tube and you will see the plug. most times it will sit right behind the tranny on the rh side of the bike. don't worry about the motor holds little oil and the tranny is separate and holds its own oil.

I have a 2009 harley sportster 1200c can i change the derby cover with out removing the oil

Yes, although I don't work on the later model bikes, I do believe you can do this because you have to take the derby cover off to adjust the clutch and you don't have to drain the oil to do that.
