Question about 1982 Honda GL 1100 Gold Wing
The problem is a failed starter clutch...

Bad starter cluck, You can rebuild this and should get parts off ebay, When you put it back together watch, It will have to be in time, A dot on the starter clutch and a Dot on the shaft, has to line up, Also one hole where the standing raller bearing sits lines up with this hole,...Easy fix.

SOURCE: Sounds like starter not engaging
Hello and welcome to FixYa!
This is a common problem on all Motorcycles. I strongly suggest that you replace the starter relay. If the relay is faulty, it tends not to let the current pass. One good reason why the starter fails to start sometimes. Have it replaced and you'll be good.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!
