There is a clutch in the starter motor which holds the starter gear away from the main shaft when it is not turning. this can seize and would cause the problem you are indicating.

is there a way to test it?

  • Michael Green Nov 29, 2012

Yes, but you would have to remove it. If you put your hand on it and try and crank the engine, you may be able to feel the clunk of the gear moving.

The starter motor will not engage

Hi, Paul the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Starter will spin but will not engage on z445

The bendix may not be pushing the gears to engage the flywheel. Take out the starter and have it tested.

Starter on 83 fxrt spins but wont engage

Check all your connections to starter and battery. If all connections are tight and the starter doesn't engage, it's time for a new starter.

I have a 1999 Gilera Runner 180FXR, New bat 12V 9 amps. Starter turns and spins pinion gear but won't engage starter ring. If it does it turns ver slow or won't turn engine over. In manual it

Yep, not enough amps to engage the starter clutch, and when ti does engage, not enough amps to turn the engine. You need a 12 amp battery.

I just replaced a 1979 shovelhead starter (and new housing gasket and oil deflector plate) and the starter just free spins, Help!!

What ever it is it sounds like the starter Bendix isn't engaging. Need to know if it is engaged by a solenoid or centrifugally engaged.

Put in new starter it just spins doesnt engage motor

The starter engages with the starter clutch, normaly when the starter spins and doesnt engage, it is because the clutch bearings within the clutch have worn the machined surfaces causing the clutch to stick and not engage when the starter is pressed

The starter isn't kicking out the jackshaft or bendix and engaging the flywheel or starter sprocket it sounds like.
