Hi jay,,if u r having to use the choke to keep it go ideling , then either u the idel jet is blocked and will give u fuel starvation ,so usin the choke the main jet has to force fuel in 2 the float chambers,, at the bottom of the carb,, so firstly remove bottoms of carbs and one jet at time take the needle jet and main out , u will see little holes on the needle jet.or needle guide jet if u like, poke a pin in the holes ,and blow threw till u see light threw them, give every thing in the bottom carb a clean while u r there, then replace that jet and everything else ,,then move to the next carb and repeat the process,,put carbs back on the bike, then air boxmake sure theres no air leaks between air box and carbs ,, try that matey,, hope it helped,,

2002 yamaha venture 600 won't idle unless choke is engaged

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting ***** set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture ***** set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.

Have a 04 yamaha big bear 400. hard to start wont stay running unless chock is on spits and sputters and ocacionaly back fires. when try to throttle it it boggs through intake.

I have an 01, and it started doing this. I don't remember the circumstances. It's just dirty in the carb I think.

1) Check for water in the gas.
2) Turn off the petcock and drain the carb. turn it back on.
3) Try it.
4) Start it with the choke on and put your hand over the air filter hole. Will cause some back flow.
5) Try again.

Worked for me. Might be dirtier on yours, or have mud in it or something.
