Question about 1993 kawasaki ZZR 400

1 Answer

No power and high fuel consumption

The bike does not seem to go faster than 120km/h in 6th gear. It picks up nicely through all the gears but as soon as I reach the higher gears (5 and 6) the power drops and I cannot maintain the speed. To keep it at around 130 km.h I need to be in 5th gear at about 11000 revs.
The fuel consumption therefor is high as to i have to have the throttle open full to keep up the revs.

Suspect worn needle valve & seat assembly !---Quick test , with care>Whilst riding on open road &holding throttle at set position, switch off fuel supply & note IF engine speeds up, IMMEDIATELY Back off throttle, watch rear vision mirrors for traffic behind & switch on fuel supply!---If that small test indicates Carburettor area of further examination, UNLESS YOU ARE QUALIFIED the needle valves need to be examined byTrained eye!-(Especially wear on sides of needle valve & ALSO, check "floats"Stay Upright Des

Bear in mind that even without the engine running there may be a number of things drawing power:

The ignition coil will be powered up
Does the bike also have permanent running lights on as soon as the ignition is engaged?
Your neutral light will be on (only .2 of an amp)
Does the bike have an electric fuel pump?

All these things may add up. You are only drawing about 25 watts, which is the power it takes to illuminate a brake light.

While I don't have data on the power consumption, it doesn't seem that excessive

My honda cbr looses power in 5th and 6th gear

Hi there.
When in the upper gears, reduced power output from the engine becomes more noticeable in 5th and 6th gear due to the more direct drive created by the higher ratios. First thing I would do is put some additive in the fuel to clean the fuel system and decarbon the head and combustion chambers. I use a Nulon product, not sure what you can get in your part of the world. Techron is another good well known product that works. In fact, if you bike is affected by buildups any brand name cleaner additive will help with the problem.
Also check that the drive chain is well lubed, a dry chain can rob up to 2 kw of power. Check wheel hubs for excessive heat/bearing problems. Happy to talk to you more about it. Cheers

Loses power in 6th gear

Not much to go on here. Power loss in a high gear would likely be attributed to carburetor. No bike, no year, no info, little tough to help you. The throttle would likely be fairly wide open in 6th gear where the bike would have the least power and would be calling for gas and probably not getting enough- or possible to little/too much air. Either way if runs in lower gears it isn't likely to be plugs or ignition, timing, valves or other obvious mechanical stuff.

CBR 400 RR 1991 jerks in 6th gear

in this high a gear, and with the small cc of the bike, and age of it ,it just doesnt have enough torque in that gear unless you are going very fast. nothing is wrong, just save that gear for when you are going real fast

Sounds like you need the carbs cleaned and synchronized, then the idle set once the bike warms up. May also have a cracked intake boot, or a vacuum line off.
