Ok, mikeyrandell, I will try to help. I used to work on sprints alot but that was a long time ago. I am searching deep into what remains of my brain.
I believe in '71 the sprint still had a tiny 6 volt battery. The battery must have some juice to get you started, so if you are in doubt hook a charger to it. I think it is under the side cover, I don't remember which side. On the right side of the engine, is a small round cover. Under it you will find the points and condenser. From here it is pretty standard stuff. The point gap is .022 ( I think) but the most important thing now is that they are opening and closing when you rotate the engine with the kick starter witch is on the left side. Find the ignition coil. It is under the fuel tank (I think). On the small positive terminal you should have positive voltage to the frame and the negative terminal should have voltage with points open and 0 volts with the points closed. This is just for starters, if it still has no spark, we will dive a little deeper. Harley Sprints were actually pretty cool little bikes and have not been built since '73.

How do you change the spark plugs in a

Instructions
  1. Remove the spark plug boot from the spark plug you wish to remove. The spark plug boot is black rubber on the Yamaha Royal Star, located at the top of each cylinder. It is removed by simply pulling the boot straight off of the spark plug. You will hear an audible "pop" when the spark plug boot disengages from the spark plug head.

  2. Insert the spark plug socket onto the spark plug, then the eight inch socket extension, then the socket wrench. Loosen the spark plug by turning the wrench in a counterclockwise motion, being careful not to hit the motorcycle fuel tank with the handle of the socket wrench. The spark plug will stick a little at first, but then will come out easily. Avoid allowing anything to drop into the spark plug hole while the plug is removed.

How do i test to see if the spark plugs are fireing

Hi Anonymous, remove spark plug wires off of plugs, leave spark plugs in heads. Use a 3rd known good spark plug to check for spark.
Insert 3rd spark plug into any spark plug wire, ground the threads on bare metal like the edge a cylinder fin. Turn ignition switch on and make sure run/stop switch is in run position and the bike is in nuetral. Hit the starter button and watch for spark. Good luck

1988 sportster / no spark at plugs

Hi Anonymous, the CKP sensor needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
Good luck

What do i have to do to change the spark plugs on a 2006 yamaha royal star

On the V4, there are two spark plugs per cylinder, for a total of eight plugs, with four being accessible behind and under the fuel tank, and the other four being mounted behind the fairing, accessible with a socket extension on your ratchet.

2

Insert the spark plug socket onto the spark plug, then the eight inch socket extension, then the socket wrench. Loosen the spark plug by turning the wrench in a counterclockwise motion, being careful not to hit the motorcycle fuel tank with the handle of the socket wrench. The spark plug will stick a little at first, but then will come out easily. Avoid allowing anything to drop into the spark plug hole while the plug is removed.

3

Insert the head of the new spark plug into the rubber o-ring inside the spark plug socket, then apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the spark plug to help prevent cross-threading. Gently thread the new spark plug into the spark plug hole until it is finger tight. Cross threading will be indicated by the spark plug's resistance to being threaded after just one or two turns of the spark plug. If this happens, remove the plug and adjust the angle of the plug when inserted into the hole

4.

Thread the spark plug into place, then tighten it down gently, not applying too much pressure. Reinstall the spark plug boot by simply pushing it down over the spark plug head until it snaps into place.

Fouling of the spark plug makes the exhaust extremely hot due to the burning of the fuel mixture inside the exhaust pipe and the spark plug end turn to black, fouling of the spark plug may be due to too rich fuel mixture check the correct setting of the air valve.
