SOURCE: gas gas 450 fse 2005 lcd spedo turning off when cold outside

I have encountered this on more than one occasion. My experience has been a solder joint on the internal circuit board that is non conducive to cold weather. It has something to do with shrinkage on the board. Although I have only been able to track the exact problem one time, (a small crack in the panel board), all other times I have had to replace the actual unit.

SOURCE: i cant seem to get a spark all wires are correct

This could be caused by a defective kill switch. With the lights on operate the kill switch. Do the lights dim slightly? If they don't the kil switch is probably at fault. If not, I don't know what it could be!

Running prob

The only issues I have had with my '02 Fse400 running wise have been with the charging circuit and only because of loose/broken wires. They run terribly if they don't have proper (14.4v) voltage. At the end of the day they are just another motorcycle if your dealer can't fix it find a better mechanic.,,,

Placement of Throttle Cable

I can't tell you how glad I am to hear of a problem my '05 FSE doesn't have! Mine won't melt the throttle cable to do that it would have to start (kick or electric) and then stay running (just shuts off now and then). Haven't dared take it more than 1/2 mile from home (couldn't push it back from any further) now it's warm enough that I don't want to push it at all so it will probably continue to gather dust until fall. I sure wish there was a dealer within a few hours ride who knew anything about them.,,

Voltage leak

and now the new one is dead too. It charges 13.5 volts which i think is ok but I did a battery leakage test with the ignition off negative cable off the battery and multimeter (set on volts) between the negative terminal and cable and it seems to be leaking though the circuit that has the 3 amp fuse. I can't find a wiring diagram anywhere to tell me what this circuit supports. Can anybody tell me what fuses power what so i can find the culprit stealing my electricity?,Voltage won't tell you anything about a battery being drained. Two things to check. 1. insert an ammeter between the negative battery post and the ground wire(s). With ignition off, you should read zero (or single milli-amps). That will tell you if you have some sort of parasitic drain. if it is 100's of milli-amps, then you have a parasitic loss. If that is the case, then you need to start opening circuits to try and find the circuit which is causing the loss. once you open the circuit and the drain drops, you've found the bad loop. now you just have to find the issue with that loop. 2. if you read zero or single milliamps, then you probably aren't charging. you should also use an ammeter to see if you're putting current back into the battery. If you are, then you need to see that you have a voltage rise at the battery terminal when the bike is running (probably over 3K rpm). You have to look at both voltage and current to get a good handle on the charging system. ,,,

Screen cleaning

of course). There is nothing mentioned of this in the service manual. The workshop manual says 'clean' when you are reassembling the engine after a complete teardown. I don't do that very often . There's no risk things fall apart when loosing the cover?Yes just undo the plug on the side near gear selector. Be careful with screen as it is plastic and has o-rings to seal it. Clean with degreaser works best I feel. Reassemble putting screen fully in first then carefully screwing plug back in.,

Cam/valve clearances

my mate says that if the gaps are bigger then its ok and that it's when they are smaller that u need to do something about them is this true? bit of xtra info: the manual says inlet 0.15mm and exhaust 0.25mm clearance. my bike measures inlet 0.20mm and exhaust 0.30mm i'm just a bit concerned 'cos if the worst happens i wo'nt be able to afford a top end rebuild. You should try and keep the clearance to 0.15 in and 0.25 ex. With the de-comp it is cridical to have the exhaust clearance correct. On the early 400/450 they had some cam problems so check the shim buckets and cams are not worn.,
