Your K-bike service manual and my own K-bike experience suggests changing the final drive oil once a year and lubricating the splines about every 30k miles. On my '85 K100 I went 130,000+ miles with only one final drive issue, a seal failed in the final drive.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, re-lubrication would depend on how often the bike is used as well as distance traveled. Normal usage would require at least once a year. Of course when greasing the driveshaft, might as well change/fill differential oil. Not really that difficult, other than the 8 bolts on the differential, the challenge is fitting back in the driveshaft to the gearbox output spline.

Transmission oil change


The V-star 1100, much like most Japanese motorcycles, uses engine oil to lubricate the transmission. (The engine and transmission share the same case and lubricant.) Therefore, checking the engine oil and trans oil are one and the same. There is a window that you look in when the bike is standing up straight.
The final drive (drive shaft at the rear wheel) takes Hypoid gear oil, and should be filled to the bottom of the threads on the fill plug.

I'm replacing the rear tire on a 77 goldwing 1000 and would like to be sure of the removal procedure just so no tricks are missed. I've done all chain drive rears but never a shaft drive.


If you have saddlebags you may have to remove them or raise the cycle high enough to drop the tire out the bottom. Center stand the motorcycle, unbolt the caliper and hang it from a piece of wire,unbolt the rear axle and remove it ( You may have to unbolt the shocks to drop the swing arm low enough so the axle clears the muffler),knock out the spacer, grab the wheel and pull it sideways/slide it off of the final drive spline, The tire should roll out the back of the wheel well now. If it gets caught on the final drive spline let the air out of the tire and squeeze it past. Before reassembly go to the local Honda and purchase some Moly60 Paste to lubricate the spline of the final drive.

Oil leak -between inner primary and transmission . Changed broken belt and now I have this leak. I put new mainshaft seal and jackshaft seal. Help!!!


There are several seals that can leak in this area. You say you replaced the mainshaft seal in the back of the primary. I've seen a lot of people replace this seal only to have it start leaking immediately. The reason was that they didn't know you must lubricate the seal before you reinstall the primary cover. When you put the primary cover on with the seal dry, when the engine starts up, the mainshaft immediately goes to 1000 RPM or higher with no lubrication on the seal. The friction burns the lip of the seal up before the lubrication in the primary can get there. It only take a second, literally.

Other seals that can cause leaks in this area are the large final drive gear seal in the face of the transmission behind the front belt pulley and the "Quad" seal that is inside the transmission. The Quad seal is almost like an O-ring. It's purpose is to prevent transmission lubricant from seeping out through the splines of the final drive gear. If the front sprocket splines wear and the sprocket gets the slightest bit loose, the compression on the Quad seal will be lost and the tranny will leak. The tale tell sign on this leak is that the transmission will leak a spot of oil about the size of a quarter or a bit bigger when you park the bike. If you wipe up the spot, it won't leak anymore until you either ride the bike or simply start the engine. Then it'll leak that quarter sized spot and stop. Check your lube level in your transmission.

Whenever I pull the inner primary and the belt on a Big Twin, I replace ALL the seals. Make sure you lubricate the lips on the seals so they don't cook before lubrication can get to the seal.

Unfortunately, you can get noise from the transmission, clutch basket, drive shaft, pinion gears or rear wheel on the Royal Star. No way to tell which you have so:

Barring a failure of the clutch basket, a change to a multi-grade synthetic oil THAT DOES NOT HAVE AN ENERGY-CONSERVING SEAL ON THE BOTTLE will quiet gear and clutch noise. Energy-conserving oils tend to make a wet clutch slip. Try Shell Rotella-T (T6) synthetic, available at Walmart for about $19.00 a gallon, I've got 111,000 on a Tour Deluxe with it, and it just keeps going...

The drive shaft on the Royal Star can also make noise if both ends are not properly lubricated; tourers have found that Honda Moly 60 paste on both ends at about 15,000 mile intervals will eliminate that aggravation.

Hypoid gears in the final drive can also be noisy. Short of having the drive disassembled and replacement shims installed, changing to a good synthetic 75W-140 lubricant will quiet or eliminate the whine.

Splines and pins in the final drive and rear wheel assembly can also cause noise. Remove the rear wheel, put a thin layer of Honda Moly 60 paste on the pins, dampers and in the drive spline, ditto with the mating spline on the final drive. I relubricate all of these every time I change rear tires, probably more often than necessary, but it's convenient to do when the wheel is off.

The transmission is lubricated by the engine oil, and the final drive has a drain plug that can be removed to facilitate changing.

Unfortunately, you can get noise from the transmission, clutch basket, drive shaft, pinion gears or rear wheel on the Royal Star. No way to tell which you have so:

Barring a failure of the clutch, a change to a multi-grade synthetic oil THAT DOES NOT HAVE AN ENERGY-CONSERVING SEAL ON THE BOTTLE will quiet (but not necessarily eliminate) gear and clutch noise. Energy-conserving oils tend to make a wet clutch slip. Try Shell Rotella-T (T6) synthetic, available at Walmart for about $19.00 a gallon. Broken clutch springs and bent or warped clutch and friction plates can also be noisy, but that is typically experienced across the whole speed range; fixing a problem like that would involve replacement of the clutch assembly. The transmission gears are straight-cut for strength, and tend to be noisier than bevel-cut gears, still, if the noise remains annoying after an oil change, have the dealer or, better yet, a veteran Royal Star rider, evaluate the noise to see if it is excessive.

The drive shaft on the Royal Star can also make noise if both ends are not properly lubricated; tourers have found that Honda Moly 60 paste on both ends at about 15,000 mile intervals will eliminate that aggravation.

Noise on final drive


The drive shaft on the Royal Star can make noise if both ends are not properly lubricated; tourers have found that lubricants with a high molybdenum disulfide content applied to both ends at about 15,000 mile intervals will eliminate that aggravation. A readily available lubricant, Honda Moly 60 paste (60% molybdenum disulfide by weight) has been used by Goldwing owners for years, and it works just as well on Royal Stars.

Hypoid gears in the final drive can also be noisy. Short of having the drive disassembled and replacement shims installed, changing to a good synthetic 75W-140 lubricant will quiet or eliminate the whine.

Splines and pins in the final drive and rear wheel assembly can also cause noise. Remove the rear wheel, put a thin layer of Honda Moly 60 paste on the pins, dampers and in the drive spline, ditto with the mating spline on the final drive. I relubricate all of these every time I change rear tires, probably more often than necessary, but it's convenient to do when the wheel is off.

Final drive belt or o-ring chains


and have noticed that the cheaper brands such as Hyosung use final-drive belts instead of o-ring chains. Is this a significant indicator of lower quality or performance? Is there any real difference between the two types of final-drive? I have heard that the belt slightly lowers the horsepower to the rear wheel. To be honest I haven't noticed. I do like the minimal maintenance. Chains are a little noisier require lubrication, cleaning, more frequent tensioning..... Is Harley Davidson a cheaper brand? They use belt drives. They last at least as long, if not longer than chains.,,,
