SOURCE: kawasaki zzr1200 non starter

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A few ideas:

  • The buzzing/vibration would be the solenoid and it would only do so if the battery's charge is not sufficient to start the bike. If the battery is fully charged, then the sound would be a click/clack;
  • to try & free the engine internals, with the plugs removed, sparingly spray the inside of the combustion chamber with WD40 or preferably 2T oil (used for 2 stroke bikes). Let it sit for a while and then try turning the rear wheel while in first gear with the plugs still off;
  • alternately, try the starter again with the same conditions as above but rather than one long press of the starter button, try short/momentary press of the start button;
  • if the above fails, you may need to gain access to the left side of the engine by removing some of the body works. Some versions have a snap-off circular cover on the body. There would be a disc with slot, Remove said disc. Inside would be a big nut 17/19mm. You would need preferably a T wrench that fits and would be used to turn the crankshaft but not fully forcing it. You have to do it by feel. If considerable resistance, stop;
  • remove the entire body work; remove cylinder head with care on the rubber gasket. apply WD40 oil liberally on the camshaft, caps and let it drip down on the timing chain.
  • try again using the T wrench.
Would appreciate an update. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Check continuity at the kill switch? sidestand switch? Either could be malfunctioning. What does your manual tell you about the starter relay circuit?

SOURCE: battery is fine, but upon starting only makes buzzing sound

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have the battery externally charged and/or load tested. This is just to verify its current output capacity not just the voltage.

Offhand, the "...loud buzzing sound..." indicates that the starter relay is cycling on/off on a fast rate. This could only be brought about by the supply voltage going up & down. Possibilities then are:

  • loose, corroded battery terminals / connectors & other electricals including the engine and frame ground straps.(most likely);
  • faulty starter relay (likely);
  • faulty charging system (likely);
  • weak or about to fail battery (least likely).
Postback results / updates on above checks.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Any ideas ?

There is a problem with the starter solenoid or the starter teeth aren't syncing properly with the engine. With such low mileage, I can only assume the starter has been used when the engine was running.

Is it just one loud clunk when you press the starter, or is it a noise that continues until you release the starter button? If it is continuous, that might be the starter clutch. Unfortunately, a look at the service manual shows that the engine case must be split to access the starter clutch (huge job, engine must be removed from the bike and turned upside down.)

Hi, Robyn and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty starter button/switch.
6. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
7. Security alarm needs a reset.
8. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
9. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
10. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

WON'T START,BUZZ SOUND WHEN I PUSH THE START BUTTON

Sounds like a bad battery or a bad starter relay. Take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to load test the battery for you.

If the battery test good, reinstall it in the bike making sure your connections are good. Press the start switch and listen for the buzz. Look for the starter relay. It's a one inch plastic cube. When you find it, press the start button while holding the relay. Is this what is making the noise?

If all you feel out of the starter relay is a simply click, and the buzzing is coming from the starter, you're solenoid may need new contacts installed in it or your solenoid might be bad.

Good Luck
Steve

Starting problems

I'm having starting problems with my MOTO 6.5 ther is a 'buzzing' noise when the start button is pressed(the bike will not start or even try to fire) is it the solenoid? The buzzing noise is coming from the small item near the battery is this the solenoid? The battery is almost new so i know this isn't the problem. can anyone help? Sounds like a problem with the starter motor. Are you sure that the motor/piston is actually moved by the starter motor? If notthe buzzing noise is from the starter motor itself that runs 'free' without engaging the magnet that connects with the motor. The magnets can get 'sticky' and sometimes helped with a Careful hammering onto the starter motor. In any event you will need to rebuild or replace the starter motor unit. This all assumes that the moto still starts whenyou push her in second gear, right? Hope this helps and good luck. ,,,
