The transmission oil and the engine oil are the same. Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Automotive oil uses different additives and will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. 10w-40 oil is good for cold climate. 20w-50 for hot climate/touring. Synthetic oil will make your cycle run cooler and shift easier. Your final drive uses 80/90 hypoid gear oil. Synthetic hypoid oil will reduce friction and make your final drive run cooler. You will probably need four quarts of oil . Pour in three quarts and check the oil level. Top up as needed. If changing the oil filter you will have to run the motor to get an accurate oil level reading

Check your gas tank for rust, if it is rusty have it cleaned out with acid wash and gel coat the insides, follow the direction on the package, check your battery for voltage, pull you spark plugs out and give each cylinder a couple shots of oil in each cylinder to get some oil back into your cylinders, It will smoke some so please do it outside and not in a garage, when you get it running put a volt meter on your battery and see of it is charging,should see 14+ volts on a good rev, if not you may need to install a electronic regulator/charger made just for you model of bike, Mikes XS sell great parts for yamaha, everything you would ever need, brake kits, petcocks, electrical items etc.... SOURCE: the bolts holding the oil

You will need a good solid punch or a straight piece of metal, solid and long enough to hit with a good sized hammer. It will have to be small enough to just hit the head of the bolt. Put the punch on the bolt and smack it hard. That should jar it enough to come loose easier. Try this....

Here are the steps from the manual:
Electric Starter Removal
1. Remove L.H. crankcase cover.
2. Remove idler gear 1 and shaft.
3. Place a folded rag between the kick idler gear two (2) and pump drive gear as shown. Remove pump drive gear nut and gear. Remove cam chain.
4. Remove starter clutch assembly.
5. Remove oil delivery pipe.
6. Remove cam chain dampers.
7. Remove two (2) starter motor securing bolts. Remove starter motor.

My 1978 yamaha xs750 special wont try to start,nothing. Barn find,wanting to know how to make sure nothing internal is messed up. Can someone help. Didn't have xs750 special for Model

Where is the oil filter on a v-star 650?


Believe it or not, this is a LONG job on a dragstar. The filter is on the right hand side, behind the exhausts, behind the round YAMAHA plate held on by 3 bolts. First you have to remove your exhausts!

When you take off that exterior casing with the 3 bolts you're confronted with another 3 bolts inside, remove those and also 2 more further along the casing (towards the front tyre) the whole thing should come off now, remember to cover the pipes if necessary and put oil pan down as quite a bit will come out.

When you change the oil filter and put the new 'O' ring in, you have to grease it up well or it won't seal and you will get an oil leak and have to re-do the whole thing again. Also.... Just be careful here! You need to keep track of the bolts and make sure that they go back in the same holes. Some are 70mm, some 75mm if you get it wrong and tighten a 75mm bolt into a 70mm hole, you could crack the crank case, which will set you back about £800. It's a common DIY Dragstar error and will effectively put an older Dragstar beyond economical repair!

To avoid such a schoolboy error, draw the shape of the case you're removing onto a piece of card and as you remove the bolts poke them through the card in their respective places.

I just bought my bike off of a neighbor and was wandering where the oil filter is located on the bike


There is a round finned cover sticking out of the front of the motor with a large bolt going through the center of the cover. Use a 6 point socket to loosen the center bolt. The center bolt is almost always overtightened. Be careful not to strip the head of the bolt. The filter should come off with the cover. When you put the new filter back on consider replacing the o-ring on the bolt and the sealing bolt on the cover. With the filter cup in the palm of your hand the bolt should be sticking up through the cover. First put the spring over the bolt , then the filter washer (this is usually missing or still stuck to the old filter), then place the filter in the cup , and put the assembly on the bike so the spring is pushing the filter against the motor. Snug the center bolt enough to seal the system , but do not overtighten the bolt or it will cause you problems next oil change.

How do you change the oil on a 1985honda aspencade goldwing?


Center stand the motorcycle.First place your pan under the oil filter cover under the front right corner of the machine. Using a six point socket loosen the filter cover bolt and remove the cover. Dump out the oil in the cover being careful to save the spring and the washer that is stuck to the filter.Many Goldwings have lost there washer in a previous oil change , if lost replace the washer. If you desire change the o-ring on the bolt and the o-ring on the cover. Put the bolt back into the cover and place the spring first over the bolt, then the washer, then the filter , so the spring is pushing the filter against the engine. Put the new filter onto the motorcycle and snug up the cover bolt just enough so the oil wont leak out. Do Not Over Tighten The Cover Bolt. Now place the pan under the right rear corner of the motor. You will find a horizontal bolt near the bottom right rear corner of the main block of the motor. It will have an aluminum or copper sealing washer. Take off the bolt and let the oil drain out. When the oil is finished draining , put the bolt back in with a new sealing washer , if needed , and snug up the bolt just enough so that it does not leak or come out. Again do not over tighten the bolt. Now pour in the new oil through the dipstick hole. Be sure you use JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. You will need 4 quarts but you may have a partial quart left over. The quantity is something between 3.4 and 4 quarts. Run the bike and double check the oil level with your dipstick so you do not over fill.

Steps for an oil change on this bike 1986 yamaha maxim 700


Put your bike on the center stand. Inbetween your exhaust there is a bolt on the underside. Use a 14mm with an extender piece. Put a pan underneath, and unscrew the bolt all the way.Oil will drain. Above that there is a "shell" Its got fins on it. Thats your Oil filter. Unscrew that bolt, 12mm and remove Oil filter and spring and rod. Replace o ring with one that came with new filter. make sure its seated correctly. Install new filter, putting the rod and that spring in the correct place. Once she's finished draining, refill youtr crankcase with oil. Oil capacity is around 2.7 quarts. The place to fill is directly above your footpog on the brake side.

Most of XJ bikes uses 15w40, not bad if you use valvoline 20w50 4 stroke motorcycle oil.
