Question about 2005 Honda VT 1100 C2 Shadow Sabre

1 Answer

I can't start in gear with the clutch held in.

I'm aware that some motorcycles, possibly even this one, can't be started in gear with the clutch held in. I want to rig it so that I can. At one point everyone has popped the clutch or the bike was still cold and died at a light. Trying to find neutral at a green light can be dangerous, people getting ****** off or not paying attention at all. There is probably a safety wire somewhere that needs to be grounded or shorted. Does anyone know where that wire would be located and what I should do?

Will not shift into first gear

Sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment, or needs to be bled. Most of the ktm's use a Magura hydraulic clutch which can be bled using Mineral Oil. DO NOT USE BRAKE FLUID.

1999 Honda Shadow VT1100C Clutch Problem

indicates that the clutch adjustment is incorrect ( possible incorrect oil in use) and the pressure plate is allowing a slow slip until it gets to the point that clutch fade occurs ( friction heat build up glazes the plates
if hydraulic clutch operation , could be in the compensating port in the clutch master cylinder not allow the fluid to pass back to the reservoir properly
if cable a failing clutch cable inside the outer case
At this point , changing and using the recommended oil, and checking the clutch operation method and adjustment may fix it before going into the expense of a clutch
talk with an accredited service dealer first will probably save you cash

How do i bleed the clutch on a fzr 1000 year 89

Is there a bleeder nipple at the clutch slave cylinder? If there is, make sure the clutch's resivoir is full, squeeze the lever and while it's held down, loosen the bleeder. Close the bleeder before letting up on the lever, then repeat until the air is purged from the system. If there is no bleeder, you will need to crack open the fitting from the line to the slave cylinder while holding the lever down and re-tighten it before letting the lever back up; repeat until air is purged. If you have to open the fitting, be aware that you may need to follow up once or twice since there is a possibility that air could still be entrapped below the fitting. Good luck and safe riding.

I have a Renegade 200 and it Starts but won't

Try shifting into gear when the motor isn't running. If it goes into gear check your clutch adjustment; if the clutch remains partially engaged you wont be able to get it into gear.

What can i do to make it easier to get the bike into neutral ?

Not very much. Bikes are like that. This happens because the clutch continues to have a little drag while the release lever is being held in, and that drag loads the transmission parts. Motorcycle gear selection is accomplished by sliding pins into holes on the sides of the gear(s). If there is some loading, the pin is trying to push the gear, and de-selecting that gear requires sliding that pin out of the hole in the gear while there is friction on the side of the pin from the loading. All fixes for this will be associated with trying to find a way to get the clutch to release more fully.

Tighten the clutch cable a little, being careful not to tighten it so much that the clutch starts to slip under power.

Use a thinner oil (though this is really not a good idea).

Replace all the clutch parts (not just the discs, but the baskets & such). The discs wear dents into the marts they mate with, and tend to stay in those dents, increasing the friction just a little while the clutch is released. But just a little is all it takes.

Get in the habit of shifting to neutral while still rolling, so that, even though the clutch is creating drag, the drag is trying to spin the parts at the speed they are already spinning at, so there is no loading of the transmission parts. This takes a little practice.

Check the switch on the clutch master cylinder that prevents the motorcycle from being started in gear.
