Hi this is an older bike i am assuming everything is stock. since it run better with the intake is partially blocked i would check for an intake leak at the carb joints / manifolds second dirty carbs.
intake leak check (WD40 with he motorcycle running at idle spray around the manifolds if the rpms change you have a intake leak replace gaskets or o-rings.
Actually i would perform all of the above clean carbs and servive the carb joints especially if they have dried out and hard.

when you put on a new air filter you have to rejet the carb in order for the air/fuel mixture to be correct, because with a aftermarket air filter it is allowing more air in than before and not enough fuel. as the piston speeds up upon exceleration the air is not getting burnt off into exhaust because you do not have enough fuel in the mix

SOURCE: banshee wont rev

Usually related to TORS, specifically the safety switch in the clutch/park brake assembly. If it's defective the engine won't rev. Solution: look for a TORS removal kit.

the problem with the rubber was close but on the gs450 there is a metal insert that even if the rubber was rotted away the metal seals aginst the head so it cant leak. the problem is on the gs 450 suzuki used a cheap throttle cable that kinks behind the gas tank and kinks at the bend to the crabs under the set and the throttle system is a pull only not a dual cable pull push to always close the throttle. if you start the bike a wiggle the bend in the cable that comes out from the twist grip you will see it changes the idle. with either your finger or a screw driver and push the plate down on the carbs that the cable connects too. if the idle drops this conforms your problem. order a new cable from dennis kirk they have the revised one that has metal adjustment screw and metal clip in. better jacket casing as well.

Why will my Suzuki GSF1200 not rev over 6700 rpm ? could there be a problem with the ICU ?

Hi, William and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking.
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP or CMP, MAP, ETS, ATS, TPS, O2 sensor.
9. Intake air leak.
10. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, carburetor and/or filter.
11. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
12. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
13. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
14. Damaged carburetor.
15. Incorrect valve timing.
16. Weak or broken valve springs.
17. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.

Hey Elijah... the main jet on these bikes is not "adjustable"...it is a set sized jet.. what you did is probably fixed the air leak that was causing the rev issue..

You need to remove and clean the carbureators. Pay close attention to the jets, use a single bristle out of a wire brush to clean the hole in the jets. Just clean the crud out, DO NOT make the hole any bigger. After getting things cleaned up reassemble and reinstall the carbs.

Cleaned carb - revs high

You must have wrongly fitted it back, check throttle cable and see if the carb air intake is closing properly when throttle is released. This should solve your problem.

83 suziki GS450 idle issues

Sorry to hear you've been looking for an answer for so long, I just stumbled on the post. Sounds like a problem I once had on an '83 Honda Magna. This was the 1100cc version but I think the carb set up was the same. There are 2 parts that are suspect from the symptoms that you're describing. One is the rubber tube that connects the carbs to the block. These tend to dry rot and crack over the years hence letting in air and messing with your mixture as it enters the cylinder. The second thing to look at is the rubber diaphragm in the top of the carb. Should just be 4 screws that hold on the top plate and under is a gasket with the idle pin underneath. Again this tends to crack on these old bikes and cause problems. I suggest you buy these parts new though, used ones are likely to have the same problem.

Good Luck

Carb problem

You have an air leak that is making the fuel mix too lean. Probably intake manifold gaskets. Other sources are reed valves chipped, deformed or broken, cylinder head gasket not fully sealing and crank seals gone bad. Your bike is 20 years old, I don't remember if your bike has reed valves.

The dealer is not going to have new parts. google " suzuki motorcycle parts " and " antique suzuki motorcycle parts "
also google " motorcycle salvage suzuki ". This should give you some sources for parts.

Please rate this solution. Thanks weldin_fool!
