Think of the battery as the BANK where electricity is kept until withdrawal is needed, like when starting the bike, stopping with brake light on and turn signal going. The output of the charging system is usually marginal on motorcycles, so batteries are needed as part of the system. The voltage regulator/stator will see to it the battery is charged back up after withdrawal, and at a certain point after the battery will accept no more charge the excess is bled off to ground. So if the battery is not in the loop, I say the voltage regulator will probably burn itself up. Final answer: YES

it's located on the front sprocket cover held on by a 4mm allen key bolt. if yor sensor is good, there is a part called the speed rotor that could be bad. the speed rotor is the plate on top of the front sprocket that sends the signal to the speed sensor.

SOURCE: fuel setting on GSX 600 R
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
"PRI" is a setting that would allow fuel to flow from the tank with or without the engine running.
"ON" and "RES" are settings that require engine to be running for the fuel to flow. It is a safety interlock on the petc0ck (fuel cut-off valve) and is activated with the presence of vacuum from the intake manifold. Vacuum will only exist if the engine is running.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa. Happy Holidays.
