SOURCE: Speedo, turn signals, brake lights, horn stopped working. All else is fine.

Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.

SOURCE: the left rear running doesn't illuminate. the

If you have rear running lights, the bike has an accessory (Harley OR aftermarket) running light module. If the module wiring is connected securely, it's possible the module has failed. If this is the case= no fix except to replace the module.

SOURCE: 1986 HD sportster 883 bought without turn signals.

Your bike came with front running lights (black wire) and turn signals. The wire color for the turn signals are gray wires. The grey turn signal wires have small rubber bands on them to indicate which side they are for. A brown tag indicates right turn signals and a violet tag indicates left turn signals. If you need a schematic, I have one but I cannot send it via this forum. This forum only allows for a 150Kb picture and the schematic is larger than that. I'll be glad to scan the schematic and send it to you if you'll contact me directly at [email protected] Remind me that you need a schematic for a 1986 Sporty.

Good Luck

I am trying to replace the rear turn signal on my 2001 Sportster. The signal that is on it now has a blue and a black wire. The new one only has a black wire. How do I make this work?

Before you take anything off or hook anything up, take the bulbs out of both turn signals. Look at the base of the bulbs and see if there are two or only one connections. I'm thinking you bike has rear running lights and the turn signal unit you are trying to replace it with only has the turn signal capability. Before you connect any wires, make sure the black and the blue wire on the bike are not touching anything metal. Turn the turn signal on and see which wire is hot. It probably won't flash but it'll go "hot" when you press the turn signal button. If they both only have one filament in the bulb, one connector on the base, then wire the blue wire on the bike to the black wire coming out of the turn signal. This would be my guess as the ground for the turn signal is a physical ground. If it doesn't work, try to connect the black wire to the turn signal body to make sure it's got a good ground. Now, there is the possibility that the turn signal will not work at all. Your bike is equipped with the automatic turn signal cancelling unit and they are very picky. It may sense the mismatch in the parts and not work at all.

If you have two wires that go to the turn signal and they don't work one way. You could try them switched around.
This is for a turn signal that is NOT also a running light. (Yellow Lens to Rear)
Use a test light and turn on the turn signal test both wires with the test light clipped to the ground or chassis of the bike. The wire that causes the light to blink will be the positive or hot side. That wire should attach to the bottom of the bulb.
The other wire is the Ground or common and that should attach to the side of the bulb holder.

Turn signals

Hi ..... Do you mean the indicator/turn signal or the turn signal modual ?
No flashing (but illuminated) usually means a bad (or no) earth. Try placing a wire (with stripped ends) against the indicator and a good earthing point ie the frame or engine.
Let us know how you get on.
