2001harly davidson starts but dies when choke is pushed in

Not ran in 2 months ran grate befor now runs with choke on and backfires a little. has freash gas, and charged batt. help.

Hi your low speed jet is blocked in the carb ether clean the carb or try a fuel cleaner to desolve the deposit blocking the small jet.

i'd start with removing the carbs and giving them a thorough cleaning as when bikes sit for so long, the carbs begin to get gummy/varnished from the old gas.

check for blocked holes in the pilot jet & main jet and look for "hard & dried up" gas in passages. be careful of the float bowl gasket as to not tear it or you will need a replacement.

if your engine is backfiring you probably jumped time reset your engine to top dead center valves closed on #1 cylinder check your timing: belt / chain / gears for wear

I guess you will have to reset the air-mixture screws of the carburator/s.
Not bad if you check the condition of the spark plugs...if its ..'Whitish' means lean i.e. less gas in, Brownish...means ok, 'Blackish'...means too much gas in .....'rich'
In your bike's case you may find it 'whitish'.

Hi Mike,
You will find that there is a problem with the carbie. It runs with the choke on because the choke engages the "enricher" circuit. The idle circuit is different a different circuit inside the carb. When just crack the throttle on, you use the pilot circuit, and then main jet with more twist of the grip. You will need to completely strip the carb, remove all jets, spray carbie cleaner throughout, and blow out all capillary tubes and holes inside the carb with compressed air. Pay particular attention to the fine holes inside the venturi near the butterfly valve. You may need to use a fine piece of wire, like a guitar string to open up any that are clogged.
There is not much else that will cause the symptoms you have. Check for air leaks about the inlet manifold also, spray some carbie cleaner about the manifold connections boots, the revs will change when it sucks up the cleaner through the leak.

Backfires when choke is on, but almost dies without it when idling


I would check the jetting to be safe but it could also be dirt in the carb. The main jet has very little to do with lower engine speeds and especially idle. That is controlled more by the pilot jet and circuit. Your best clue is how it responds when you add more choke. If it gets worse then there is a rich condition but if it gets better then you have a lean condition. From what you have described it sounds like a lean condition.

Hi: My 2004 Harley will only run when leaving choke on, as soon as I push in choke the bike shuts down, also backfires when giving it gas when choke is still on, do you have any ideas what maybe causing...


sat up too long pull the carb bowl remove the jets clean and reinstall them pull your petcock off clean the screen put in good gas,and you should be set when you turn the gas on if the bowl vent leaks gas tap the carb bowl the float needle will find its seat and run

I had a high performance pipe on my bike, it got damaged, put stock pipe back on and it ran fine for a couple of months, it started to backfire at idle and with throttle off but still had plenty of power. ...


I would take a close look at the valves, if you are sure the carb is entirely clean. (Accelerator pump and everything)
A closed up exhaust can harm an exhaust valve.
Start with a compression test.
Good spark?
Is the plug wet?

Last time I STARTED MY VSTAR 1100 I CHOKED IT FOR 10 SECONDS ON HIGH THEN MOVED TO MEDIUM CHOKE FOR 4 THEN TOOK OFF AT NO CHOKE. 2 WEEKS LATER. I started up bike Choke on high bike barely wanted to idle...


Sounds like your flooding it out with the choke out. Try the next time you go to start the bike when it's cold with the choke out and when it starts push the choke all the way in and keep it running with the throtle. If it runs better after doing this then your flooding it on start up. Use 1/2 choke to start cold and see what it does. Good Luck

Engine won't run unless the choke is on - Deere 14SB Push Mower


It's starving for fuel. When you push the throttle all the way forward it closes the choke. You took it apart but you probably didn;t get all the junk out of it. Easy fix is to put some SeaFoam into the tank and run it. This cleans all deposits and debris from the jets. I have used this stuff and put it in the tank and start the engine and sit back and let it run. After about 5 minutes the engine will smooth out and run fine.

B&S engine backfires, runs better with choke 1/2 out under load??


Check your rockers inside valve covers. They some time work loose. If they are loose the push rod will fall off rocker and cause the problem.
