There is a gear on the starter you need to remove starter to see if its worn out also it sounds like its not ingaging.when you have stater off check for wear on both gears if there is no teeth worn on drive gear.replace starter cause of problem is the bendix in the starter.

SOURCE: Adjusting timing on Harley Davidson 1976 sportster

The advance timing should be 35° before Top Dead Center. This is how you find out which mark this is.

Get the rear wheel of the bike off the ground, remove the spark plugs, shift the bike into fourth gear, and remove the timing plug from the left engine case.
Now, take an ordinary PLASTIC DRINKING STRAW and insert it into the front spark plug hole. Do not use anything else or you stand a chance of it breaking and then you'll have to pull the head to get it out. The plastic straw will bend but not break.
Bump the rear wheel in the direction that it turns while riding down the road until the piston pushes the straw all the way up and just barely starts going back down. Look into the timing hole. You should see a timing mark. This is the Top Dead Center mark. Now, bump the rear wheel BACKWARDS until you see another mark. This should be the ADVANCED TIMING MARK. The piston should 7/16" down from top dead center.

On this model Sportster the timing is advanced by a mechanical advance mechanism. These units are notorious for wearing out and not contolling the timing very well. You must remove the breaker plate to inspect this mechanism. Mark the position of the plate before you remove it. If the pins and holes in the flyweights are worn, replace the unit. Replace it with a good needle bearing unit. Replace the points and reset the gap at 0.018 - 0.020".

Harey Davidson gaurds it's manuals hard and has it's employees find outside sorces of the manuals and crush them. You can get on some of the harly forums and ask around and someone might email you what you need. bike bandit will sell you a manuel and the harley manels persuppose that your a trained harly tech and don't tell you things that you shouls have learned during training. So if you want to fix your own bike ( I think you should ) get an aftermarket book and read the whole thing.

SOURCE: What would make a 2001 Harley Davidson Wide Glide

Hello,

If the starter is just spinning, and not engaging, it would be the starter soloniod causing your problem. They are easy to rebuild. Most of the time, you can simply disassemble the solonoid, clean it and put it back together - while you have it apart be sure to check that the spring is good.

If you find this information useful, please vote on this post. Thank you.

Regards,

Oz

If your starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over, you over running clutch or Bendix is bad. On the Nippondenso style starter on the late bikes, this starter clutch is inside of the starter. You must pull the starter off and disassemble it to repair the starter. If you can do the job yourself, you can repair the starter and save some money. If you're going to have to pay a mechanic to do the work, simply replace the starter. Any money saved by repairing the starter in this case would be quickly depleted in labor cost.

Good Luck
Steve

1977 sportster xlh 1000 starter

Hi Anonymous, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Please visit the web site below for more help and good luck. 1997 Sportster won't start

Check the battery, try jump starting with another battery or power source, removing the plug is reducing the compression making it easier for the starter to spin. I suspect your battery or starter doesn't have the jam to spin the motor.
