Try with the kickstand up and check the kill switch on the right handlebar.

Still won't start. Tried with kickstand up, down , clutch lever in. Coasted down driveway and it compression starts real easy. Runs great. Unfortunately don't have a hill to coast down when time to come home from work. Can anyone at least tell me where the starter solenoid is so I can jump across terminals until I can track down the problem?

  • Michael Green Oct 31, 2012

The solenoid is usually under the seat , close to the battery. Or mounted on the starter motor. Although the problem may be the sidestand switch- they fail regularly try shorting this out first.

SOURCE: 1998 Honda Goldwing will not start nothing.

Sort of sounds like a Twilight Zone kind of problem doesn't it. I would have the battery checked for an internal dead short. This is something that happens on odd occasions and can happen even to a new battery. Yea, the little lights will work ( they do not draw much juice ), but the starter motor draws a lot of juice and a shorted battery just ain't got it. Also check the wiring harness connections. One loose connection can cause bunches of trouble.

SOURCE: Problems with the kickstand and neutral light on 2002 Shadow 600

The side stand kill switch is supposed to kill the engine any time the kickstand is down. This way there is no way you can take out with the stand down > Safety issue. The neutral light could be burned out. fuse burned, bad switch. The switch is located in the center of the front sprocket. There is a 15amp fuse that protects the oil, neutral, meter and tail lights > Is the fuse good?

Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual.
http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp There is a service manual with a wiring diagram in the back. The manual is for a 2001 VT600 but only minor differences to the 2002 manual.

Top rating on this solution? Thanks :D

SOURCE: the neutral light never turn off

The neutral witch is behind the clutch and as long as it is switched on the bike will not run unless you defeat the kickstand switch.

I really recommend properly repairing the neutral light switch because taking off with the kickstand down can put you down on the pavement way too easily.

I have a 2006 honda shadow aero. engine dies when put in gear. kickstand switch measuers good at plug...clutch switch measures good...clutch disengages properly...what else can it be?

Hi, Dan the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

2003 KLR 650 won't start.

The clutch also must be engaged there is a safety interlock on the kickstand and on the clutch handle.
Also the kill switch by the throttle (red rotating switch) must be on run it also prevents the starter from working.

The usual point of failure is the interlocks, you can unplug the connector from the interlock switches and jump them to test if they are working.
the clutch switch is by the pivot end of the clutch handle.
The kickstand switch is under a plastic cover about halfway up the frame, there is a cable like a bicycle brake or shift cable that runs from the kickstand to the switch under the cover.
I have a wiring diagram for this bike, if you still have problems let me know and we can run thru troubleshooting procedures.

1986 honda goldwing won't crank

Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid, starter have failed or circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.

Suzuki VL125 starter motor won't turn, ignition on, cutout in correct position, neutral light showing, hold clutch lever in, on operating starter switch I just hear a click from under the seat. If

Locate the solenoid (the thing that clicks) and peel back the rubber boots from the terminals, put a large screwdriver or metal rod between the terminals. If you get sparks and the starter turns the solenoid is faulty. If you get sparks but no starter then check the wire down to the starter and make sure it hasn't been worn through and is shorting out. If that is ok do a final check bu jumping directly to starter ie positive to starter and negative to frame. If the starter still fails to turn it need replacing

2003 vtx1300 The green neutral light will not work. The bike will start only with the kickstand uo, not dow, and cluthch pulled. Why will starter not be entergized without the kickstand down?

The green light is either a burned out bulb, disconnected wire or faulty neutral switch. Both the kickstand and the clutch lever act as a safety. The kickstand> to make sure you don't forget to put it up when starting down the street, > the clutch to make sure to make sure the bike doesn't get away from you if the shift lever is accidentally put in gear while starting. PLEASE rate my answer. Thanks!

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.
