Stupid rookie question from an experienced HD rider: I just bought a 2001 FXD 4th HD in my lifetime, but new model to me. I can't see what position is what on my fuel petcock...which...

It sounds like you have an aftermarket petcock on the bike. I am not familiar with a Harley petcock that has a round knob but then maybe just the knob is an add-on. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock, one that gives lots of problems. I cannot tell you which way is reserve on your petcock. The only way to tell for sure is to pull the petcock out. You'll see a plastic strainer on top of the petcock. Inside the strainer, there is a tube that runs approximately half way up the strainer. Select a position on the petcock valve and blow through the petcock. When you feel the air come out of this tube, this is the "ON" postilion. Right beside this tube inside the strainer is another hole directly into the petcock. Find the position that allows for air to pass through this hole and you've found the "reserve" position. The remaining position should be "off".

The timing on your bike is set automatically by the computer and cannot "jump", not even on the older models. There is a crankshaft position sensor on the left front of the engine case that senses the position of the crank. Since your bike is equipped with a carburetor, it has a fuel petcock. This petcock is operated by manifold vacuum. The vacuum line connects to the backside of the carb. Make sure it is connected at the carb and to the backside of the petcock. To check the petcock, you must have a hand operated vacuum pump. Disconnect the fuel line, connect the vacuum pump to the vacuum nipple on the backside of the petcock and apply vacuum. Fuel should run out of the fuel line. If not, you need to replace the diaphragm in the petcock. Personally, I'd replace the petcock with a high quality manual petcock like a Pingel. You'll have to turn your fuel on and off manually, old school but it won't give you any more trouble.

You can take an oil squirt can and put some fuel in it. Remove the air filter and squirt a couple of shots of fuel in the mouth of the carb. Try to start the engine. If it starts or fires a couple of times, then you know the spark is fine. If you get the engine to run long enough, it will allow the carb to fill with fuel and it may run on it's own then.

Typically there is a vacuum fuel petcock involved. When the motor is turned over a small vacuum line opens the fuel petcock and fills the carburetor with gas. If the vacuum line is not hooked up correctly the fuel will not flow when vacuum is applied. If the petcock is stuck, the fuel will not flow. Also if the carburetor has been sitting with old fuel in it for a while the float needle may be stuck closed stopping fuel flow. Clean the carburetor and inspect the fuel petcock for operation and correct hook up.

it sounds like you have trash in your jets. The bike sitting for two weeks is not long enough to cause the problem and neither is the crossover fuel line in the front of the tanks. The cross over simply allows fuel on the right side of the "hump" in the tank to get to the left side where the petcock is.

Now, the petcock could be your problem. In 1996, H-D went to the vacuum operated petcock and have had troubles with them since. If you'll look on the backside of your petcock, you'll see a small tube that supplies vacuum to the petcock. Check and make sure this tube is properly connected on both ends.

If it is, you can loosen the petcock to drain the fuel out of the tank. Catch the fuel using a large funnel and an empty fuel can. Take the petcock out of the tank. Inspect the screen. One the backside of the petcock, there is a square plate with four small screws holding it. Remove the screws and carefully take the plate off. There are several small parts in there. A diaphragm, a needle and a small spring. Take the diaphragm and hold it up to the light and carefully stretch it. Look to see if a hole is in the diaphragm. If so, replace the diaphragm. When you reassemble the petcock, make sure all the fuel passages are clear. Personally, I suggest replacing the vacuum operated petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingel. I've seen too many people stranded with a full tank of fuel but none in the carb due to these petcocks.

Gas not flowing to carburator I took petcock cover out and found that gas had stayed there and became gummy I cleaned it but feel there might be more in filter motercycle stays on but not allowed to...

Try berrymans b12 and some fresh gas through the tank and into the carb. Let it sit for 24 hours and see if that clears up the problem if not you will need a rebuild of the petcock. K&L has rebuild kits. Refer to the manual for removing the tank and petcock. Its a pretty straight forward procedure.

1980 gs 1000 fuel petcock has two connections where do they go?

On the one that has two hoses does it still have an "Off" position? Usually petcocks that have two hoses, one goes to the carb vacuum, and the other is for a fuel supply for the engine. That way it only allows fuel to flow when the engine is running. I have found these to be a poor design and can often leak and allow fuel to run into the engine if your carbs are acting up. If the replacement only has one hose, then it will work fine, just be sure to cap off the vacuum port on the carb.

Petrol in crankcase

  • The only way petrol can get into the crankcase is through the carbs and then into the cylinder and past the rings.
  • Drain the gearbox and put in some fresh oil.
  • Turn the fuel petcock to OFF.
  • Drain the carbs then remove the water trap bowl from the petcock. Does some fuel still get past the petcock valve? Replace the petcock if it does. If the petcock is working properly then remount the bowl.
  • From this point forward, ALWAYS shut the gas off when the bike is not running.

Fuel leak

Did you check the gasket under it? You can probably cut one of those out of gasket material. Unless you are sure it's the petcock.
