I have a 1990 Harley Davidson flhs. The air leaks out of the front suspension over a day. The fork seals are not leaking oil. The handle bar serves as the reservoir for the air. Any suggestions where the...

The leak most probably is coming from the seals at the "manifold" assemblies on the very top of the fork tubes. Replacement will require the windshield and speedometer to be removed for access to that area. Also check the hose that runs to the hadlebars are the might be a crack or small hole in it. BTW, while the system is supposed to be an "anti-dive" front end you will suffer no long term ill effects from having no air in it.

Does the 1990 use air in the front forks. My son just bought one and he says the front end is riding rough ?

By 1990 the air valve was to let air build up out of forks in most bikes. As for rough riding , change the oil first, 5wt or 2.5wt for softer damping

How much fork oil does a 1990 cr 500r require

as you probably know, the amount of fork oil is dependent upon the condition of the springs and weight of the rider. the highest fork oil level is 120mm for minimum air space and highest pressure.

if bottoming and head shake are occurring you must increase the oil level and or change the springs.

Front fork oil seal replacement

General intructions for most bikes:

Remove front wheel. Loosen fork tube clamps at top and bottom of triple clamps. Slide fork tubes out and remove. Access to seals is from top of tube. Remove cover and unscrew cap. Shop manual for specific bike is $24-$30. Will show detailed instructions.

Good luck;
