Question about Honda CBR 600 F(3)W Motorcycles

No fuel to carb

Bought the bike from a guy that had it sitting for 3 years. it did not run the motor did turn. when i got it home i drained the tank and used the screw under each carburetor to drain the carburetors. added new fuel and gave it a try but no luck. i try a couple of times and checked with the drain screw under one of the carburetors but no fuel came out. the pump does feel like its pumping. help please

SOURCE: Fuel Leak from the Carburetor

Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Check the float as they can go bad and fill with gas such that they no longer float. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. The idle speed will probably different so adjust the idle screw to get back to where it was. This process should get you back on the road.

are you turning the choke off after its warmed up? most will not run with the choke on and warmed up.

also try running it with the gas cap open to see if you have a vent issue in your tank. if air can't get in, then gas can't flow.

if not a choke or vent issue, then try this. turn the petcock off and then disconnect the fuel lines one at a time going into the carb. start with carb fuel line #1 disconnected (and the rest connected) and in a coffee can, turn petcock on and ignition too. fuel pump should come on momentarily and inject some fuel. see how the quantity looks. reconnect the line to carb #1 and repeat for carbs #2 - #4. your looking for a decrease in fuel to a couple of cylinders.

if all looks fine, i would then focus on the carb floats & jets. have the carbs been off for a good cleaning lately? modern fuel breaks down quickly and could cause a gumming condition in the carbs. spraying the sea foam or carb cleaner into the carbs is bypassing the everything in the carb bowl (but it means the spark plugs are ok) so there could be an obstruction. i would look there first.

if uncomfortable removing the bank of carbs, you can try a quick fix first. with the petcock closed, open the drain screws of each carb and let the gas drain out. go and buy some yamaha carb cleaner (liquid in a black bottle) at a yamaha motorcycle dealer. mix it in a separate container with gas as recommended. close the drain screws on each carb. pour the mixture into each fuel line feeding the carb and let it sit overnight. DO NOT POUR THIS MIXTURE INTO YOUR TANK. its not a fuel additive, but a cleaner that will not harm orings or gaskets, but it will not ignite with a spark plug. open the drain screws the next morning and let the mixture pour out. reconnect the fuel lines to the carbs and test drive it.

if that didn't work, then removing the carbs for a good cleaning is my next step. good luck.

Guess I should post my answer as a solution so you can rate the solution. Clarifications can't be rated. Any results yet? The timing should be okay. Sitting for two years will not change it. Pull all the plugs and give a shot of WD40 into each cylinder while pushing the starter button. This will get some lubrication to the cylinder walls and piston rings. It will also help the rings to seal up. Now do the compression check. The readings should be within 10 psi of the top reading. If using aerostart, spray it into the air cleaner not the carbs. The air cleaner will greatly lessen the chances of a fire caused by an engine backfire. Always have a fire extinguisher on hand when messing with the carbs.

Bear in mind that some of the rings may be stuck in the piston grooves and will not be free to spring outward to seal against the cylinder wall. The WD40 may help here also. The worst case is that you will need to pull the head and cylinder to physically free the rings. Your pike is now 19 years old and the valves have probably never been worked on. Now would be the time to re-seat the valves. Depending on the condition of the cylinder, piston and rings, you may want to re-bore the cylinder and mount new piston and rings. At least run a cylinder hone through each cylinder.

I was going to just post this as a "clarification" but have sort of gotten into it now. All I ask is a "Helpfull" rating The "Thanks for trying" rating is a real bummer for a guy just trying to help. Get back to me.
Not sure what manual you have but compression is never checked at anything above idle. Crank and idle speed compression should be 140 to 160 psi.

You cannot bleed the fuel injection system.Test the pump alone (not on the bike) for sufficient fuel supply.Also check the fuel pump relay.
If all that is ok next time you try to crank the engine (only with kill switch on, the fuel pump primes up) with lifted tank and opened air box, spray a bit of carb cleaner spray towards the throttle bodies.It will help.

Bike has been sitting a year, new battery, new spark plugs, will crank but will not start.


The fuel in the tank may have crystallised and clogged either the needle valves if carb( which will force fuel out through the overflows if you change the fuel. If injection it may find its way through, with new fuel but get some injection cleaner as a tank additive. Job 1 drain out tank, shake some new fuel around to wash it out job 2 remove fuel tap check for a build up of gung and crystallised fuel job 3 new fuel up. all the best markj3594@gmail.com

It sounds like the float needle valves are lletting gas run into the bowl,in turn running gas into the motor,and fouling the spark plugs. Have you noticed if the oil level seems to be going UP,or the fuel level is going down? Kawasaki motorcycles are prone to leaking needle valves in the carbs for some reason. And the longer it sits,the worse its going to get.Try this,...pull the spark plugs and see if they are wet with fuel.Then,unhook the coils,and spin the motor over with the plugs out.If it shoots raw fuel about a foot out of each or ANY cylinder,then that is your problem. JUST BE SURE TO DISABLE THE COILS BEFORE SPINNING MOTOR OVER,AND DONT BE CLOSE TO THE PLUG HOLES WHEN YOU SPIN IT OVER!!

A week ago i took my bike to get fixed at a shop it had been sitting for about 2 years the guy said it was a dirty carb and a dirty gas tank he cleaned both and the bike ran fine i rode it for 2 min. or so...


Try replacing spark plug,and check for spark if you do good,check to see if you have fuel to carb,at bottom of carb there is a float bowl screw loosen the screw and let fuel drain,tighten screw,choke and try again,sometimes when bike sits that long it may need one or two cleans,the bad gas that was in it still has varnash build up and can still clog up the jets.hope this helps.

Will not idle


Your carbs are dirty and need to be cleaned. A tank of bad gas or old gas can gel up the jets. You buy gas, drive home, and when you get there the bike stops idling. Light gelling can be fixed by draining the carbs (screw on bottom of bowl), pulling the fuel line off the tank, and squirting some motorcycle carburetor cleaner down the fuel line. Plug the fuel line back in turn on the gas and start up the bike. If that doesn't work, using the same procedure buy some Chevron Techron fuels system cleaner, pour directly into the carbs and let sit over night (also drain tank and heavily treat one gallon of gas and put in tank) Fire up bike and let run ,idle, slow drive for 5 to ten minutes. This will usually get cycle idling without disassembling carbs. If it still wont idle you will have to take off the carbs, disassemble and clean blowing through the jets and jet passageways.

Bike Sitting For 2 Years .. Need help


You say the bike is a custom so I don't have a good idea of what we're dealing with here but it shouldn't be that difficult.

Most custom bikes have carbureted engines. The first thing to do is drain the fuel tank and get some fresh fuel and a good battery. Check the oil in the tank. As long as the oil is showing on the dip stick, proceed to start the engine. Do not add oil at this time because the engine may be "oil sumped". When they do this, the oil in the tank seeps past the check ball in the oil pump and accumilates in the bottom end of the engine. When you start the engine up, the oil pump will scavenge the oil out and back into the oil tank. Once the engine runs for a few minutes, then turn the engine off and check the oil level. Fill it to the lower mark on the stick, full cold level.

Now for the biggie, the carb. If the engine has been sitting for two years, the jets in the carb are probably clogged up. When the fuel left in the float bowl evaporated, it left behind a thick gummy deposit made up of the additives that are added to gasoline. This mess will plug up the jets in your carb. It would be advisable to remove the carb, disassemble it, and soak it in carb cleaner overnight. Then check all passageways in the carb and the jets to make sure they're open. Reinstall the carb and fire your bike up. If I were in the Yuma area, I'd do it all for you but I live in Georgia. Sorry but good luck getting it back going. It's not difficult. Just keep looking for "resources".

Bought my 250 virago 1 year ago and any time i let it sit for over 6 days it would not run. told by 2 dealers and corporate it is change in fuel and additives. have added fuel additive and drained...


You can not leave anything sit for 2 years then expect to go for a cruze with no trouble. The carbs probably have scum built up in side and will have to be rebuilt. Yes I have heard of this for years.

Can you put fuel cleaner in your gas tank? my bike runs fine then it stalls and sometimes it won't start. I just bought the bike and the owner had it setting for 2 years in his garage can it be bad gas?


Hello shawn...Yes indeed gasoline can degrade over time. That can lead to a number of problems, ranging from hard starting, to rough running, to no starting at all...If your bike was stored for 2 years the gasoline in it has degraded beyond use. Even if the gas was treated with stabiliser before it was stored...it will still degrade in 10-12 months, if not sooner. I'm suprised your bike will even start. I suggest you drain ALL the gas out of the tank, Rinse and refill with fresh gas, drain your carbs as well...the stale gas has most likely clogged the pilot jets, draining the carb bowls will help.
Go to your parts store and buy a can of "Seafoam" pour 1/2 of it in with your fresh gas..use the other 1/2 on your next tank of gas.
Replace fuel filter after 1st tank, the seafoam will dislodge any debris that was in the fuel tank. It will also clean the combustion chambers and carb jets. Check your carb boots for any cracks or detoration that would cause a vacuum leak. Replace your spark plugs. If your bike is still running rough after this, then the carbs will need to be removed and cleaned and/or rejetted.

It wont stay running in stalls out from time to time


Change the fuel filter,clean the carb jets again,and replace the air filter.This should take care of it but sometimes when they sit for awhile,you will need to clean the carbs numerous time as the gunk in the tank continues to wash down into the carbs.

Bike turns over but wont start.


The problem with a bike sitting around is that the inside of the tank rusts and the gas drys up leaving a very unwanted residue of varnish in the carbs. The repair is going to be a bit of a project and very frustrating.

Remove and drain the gas tank. Remove the old petcock. Clean the rust out inside of the tank as best you can. Install the new petcock AND install an inline fuel filter.

Next, remove the carbs and disassemble for cleaning. I would spring for carb rebuild kits but only if it looks like the carbs can be saved. Often, abused carbs just need to be trashed and replaced. If you have never balanced and syncronised four carbs you are in for a very frustrating day. I am serious here > keep a fire extinguisher handy.

It's likely that the cost of fixing the bike will be more than the bike is worth, especially if you pay the dealer to do the repair. Your bike is 27 years old and most dealers will not work on anything more than 10 to 15 years old. Parts availability is a problem as well. Even if you get it running, what shape is the gearbox in? Are any of the shift forks bent? Is the clutch operational? This bike is a total shot in the dark and a risky investment at best.

I hate to be the person to tell the bad news but I would hate it more to see you put money and time into lost cause. I have the tools and experiance to fix bikes > I wouldn't want to touch this one. Best wishes anyway.
