Question about 2007 Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide

2007 streetglide main shaft bearing failure

The dealership has replaced the mainshaft bearing 3 times. Symptoms are noise in L/S crankcase cover when idling in neutral.Pull in clutch & put into gear & the noise goes away. After replacement noise is gone but comes back after 5000-10000 miles. Noise is back again but I haven't taken the bike into the dealership yet.

SOURCE: Road King Motorcycle clutch

Theres 2 clutch adjustments you can do - one is on the cable, under the boot, the other is at the clutch hub, under the derby cover in the primary. That should take care of the whine and your problem finding neutral. If you get some teflon spray and shoot it generously down the inside of your cable, you are gonna be surprized at how easy it'll pull

SOURCE: noise in trans or in primary chain

It sounds like the primary drive chain is loose. The way I adjust mine is to take off the upper left inspection cover, start the bike and slowly tighten the adjuster until it starts to wine, then back off until it stops. Rev it slowly and listen for a wine. No wine good to go.

the cheaper way to find a oil leak is to clean all the oil off the bottom of the engine and where you think the leak my be. Take the bike for a short ride , just enough to get the oil heated up to running temp and take baby power and dust the area that is suspect area for leak. it will stick to the oil and not the rest of the motor and it will show you where it's coming from.

G'day mate , sounds like primary drive / clutch basket. to find where the fault is turn the engine OFF , put it into gear and spin the rear wheel either by pushing or suspend the rear wheel , where the noise of spinning stops thats where the break in drive will be , fixing it may be a whole diferent matter but hope its just simple like clutch adjustment, ( to tight holding basket open )

I own a 2011 nissan micra accenta .when changing up from 1st to 2nd gear on depressing the clutch it whines /growls why? it does not happen in other gear changing !

INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION...

I'm only an amateur
on Datsun 240Z - 4 Speed (and 5 Speed) transmissions... but I do know a wee bit... about their
issues & symptoms.

One must have a serious cognitive challenge (sadly)
to look OUTSIDE a gearbox FOR A 1st to 2nd SHIFT
noise issue.

It probably growls & grinds in other gears as well...
just not as profoundly... Releasing the clutch merely
allows things to get looser... (where there should be
NO PLAY (looseness) at all).

but the folks that pulled the tranny... need to step up for their incompetence... A CLUTCH (cylinder & pedal) change is not CHEAP... (nor close...)

but (in my opinion) incredibly poor guesses...!!

Sorry...!!

If you live in Northern California, Bay Area... I'd seriously consider the opportunity to testify in a recovery action... on your behalf...
(and I'd recommend worms before law-suits
(H8 court)... Better idea would be to contact your LOCAL AUTO REPAIR CIVIL AUTHORITY..

I have drawers full of DATSUN parts... so it could be a real show & tell project...

Those gearboxes are really quite simple & beautiful.

If you CONTEMPLATE that there is an INPUT & OUTPUT shaft
that your intermediate gears spin at a HIGH RATIO difference in FIRST ... or NEARLY as a solid shaft in your "HIGH" gear
is a SINGLE BEARING right in between those shafts...

->> Main-shaft CENTER bearing... <<
(tiny needle bearings... in my Datsun 240Z...
(left untreated can ruin Input & OUTPUT surfaces)).

There are OTHER REASONS that could be EASILY SEEN
by a mediocre transmission specialist... (gear surface failure)...
but ALL my experience says the MAINSHAFT center bearing is the PRIMARY SUSPECT.

The MOST EXPENSIVE part of the job is pulling & placing the tranny in the car... Cracking the case is pretty easy...
but the bearings are available ...

(good time for a COMPETENT MECHANIC TO SURVEY SYNCROS & I/o BEARINGS...

SEAL & gasket replacements are a NO BRAINER
(but obviously for your clutch & pedals clowns... that should be written down (in whatever COMIC BOOK they use as SHOP MANUALS))...

In my humble opinion...

Your biggest problem NOW is to get EITHER YOUR MONEY BACK... or substantial performance for what you have ALREADY RENDERED PAYMENT.

Harley davidson whining coming from primary area

What year is the bike. Is the primary chain adjusted properly? Is there an adequate amount of oil in the primary? Check that the clutch to mainshaft nut is not loose. If none of those you could have a defective clutch hub bearing. You could also have a defective transmission input/mainshaft bearing or a main output shaft/drive sprocket bearing. Listen with a stethoscope to try to narrow down where the sound is coming from.

How to replace 2007 streetglide transmission output shaft bearing. Can it be done from thr left side?

Never had a transmission output shaft (the bearing that supports the belt pulley shaft) fail. Are you sure this bearing is gone? The bearing that usually fails is the clutch mainshaft bearing that is mounted on the inner primary casing and causes a noise that can be stopped by pulling in the clutch and putting it in gear. If this is the case, then the bearing is gone. It is replaced by removing all component from left side engine. No need to go near the transmission.

How to place the main bearing shaft support back into Muncie 4 speed transmission

Here's what Chilton has to say on assembling the main shaft.
1.assemble 2nd gear, from rear of main shaft, with hub toward rear.
2.Install 1-2 synchronizer ring , with clutch taper to rear, together with a blocker ring on each side so their keyways line up with the clutch keys. Some units will have a snap ring to go on now or some units will have a 1st gear spacer sleeve to go on.
3. Install 1st gear with hub toward front and 1st gear thrust washer.
4.Press rear main bearing onto shaft being sure to seat it firmly. The diagram shows a piece of 1 and 5/8 ID pipe used to do this.
5. Install correct snap ring in groove on mainshaft behind rear bearing. Max gap between snap ring and rear face of bearing is 0"-.005".
6.Install 3rd gear, hub to front, and synchronizing ring, notches to front.
7. Install 3-4 clutch assembly with taper and hub to front. Make sure keys in hub correspond to notches in 3rd gear synchronizer.
8.Install snap ring on mainshaft with ends of snap ring behind spline teeth.
9.Install rear bearing retainer. Spread snap ring in plate to allow plate to drop around main bearing and press on end of mainshaft until snap ring engages groove on bearing.
10. Install reverse gear with collar to rear.
11. Press speedometer gear drive on mainshaft. From the inside face of the speedometer drive to the inside face of the rear bearing retainer should be 4 and 5/16".

2007 yz450f has a low rumble when clutch is out all the way

The bearing for the clutch outer drum may be worn. The adjustment on the handlebars is to set lever free play(about 1/2 inch) before the cable becomes tight and operates the clutch release inside. Make sure the outer drum cover is tight--check with the clutch lever to make sure the plate releases the disks and plates.
