Hi, Anonymous the skid plate acts like an amplifier and I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. If you are a little short on "DRACHMA" and a Dealership is not on your list of fun places to visit then perhaps the list below will help soothe your worried mind so you can make an informed decision.
1. Bearings---SCREECH
2. Belts---CHIRP
3. Brake Rotors---BUZZ
4. Chains---RATTLE
5. Clutches---CHATTER
6. Cylinders---PING
7. Fronk Forks---Plunk
8. Gears---WHINE
9. Head Gasket---HISS
10. Hydraulic Lifters---TAP
11. Pistons---SLAP
12. Rear Shocks---SQUEAK
13. Shifting Trans---CLUNK
14. Solid Lifters---TICK
15. Starters---CLICK
16. Connecting Rods Go---KNOCK-KNOCK---who's there, it's me "*****"

SOURCE: Engine oil

They take just under 1ltr of oil. you can check the level is correct by running the engine till its warm and pulling out the dipstick located near the head stock on the frame. If the level is low then add more oil, be careful not to overfill as the later model WR's expel excess oil into the air box, this can make a mess of your air filter.

SOURCE: rear coil spring change 2004 yamaha wr 450

I have never needed to replace that part so my best help is to put a service manual in your hands.
Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual.
www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp Most of the manuals are in English but some are not. There is no way to be sure without doing the download. You can always delete it if in a foreign language. The spring is the same '03 and '04.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

SOURCE: did yamaha make a wr 400 in 2004?

I think you will find that the WR426 was last made in 2002. From that point forward it was WR250 and WR450 in the manufacturing line.

I have a 2004 wr 450, when I got it out this year and started it I noticed that it pops through the exaust a lot. What can cause this?

Hi, Anonymous popping or backfiring on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean. Can you register a yzf 450 for street use

It would be possible but probably too expensive, there are some private compliance certifying companies that do the compliance plates for many of the low volume imports. but you would need most of the WR electrics and muffler. Easier to start with a WR and fit the YZ cams.
So even if you can find a WR wreck that has the compliance plate and rebuild it with the YZ bits,it would still need the WR;s engine number
