Is it the water going through the wet end or is the motor making the funny sound?
If the motor is sounding funny then you may have a bad motor. if the wet end is sounding really noisy then the motor may not be matching the size of the wet end as far as the HP. make sense? if your motor is bigger than the rating on the wet end it is pushing way too much water it is will be very noisy.

My brand new 1.5 hp, 230/115 v pentair runs for several minutes, gets hot and then shuts off. (not tripping the breaker) ...wiring was already in place on previous 1.5 hp, 230/115 jacuzzi brand pump for...

It is probably only getting 115V from your circuit which will cause it to overheat and trip the overload yet it will not draw high current which would trip the breaker. Can you confirm your line voltage with a meter? If it is suppoed to be a 230V line then look for a bad leg of power, again, checking each leg to ground using a meter.

Wiring up Emerson 1081 pool pump. Is L1 terminal the one for the positive and the L2 terminal is for the negative? Should it be set to 115 or 230

For your 240 volt operation L1 and L2 will both be Hot 120volt lines.
Ground to green ground screw and bonding wire to bonding lug (if needed)

Please vote positively for this post if i have helped you.

I purchased a new 3/4hp Emerson pool pump installed it and the only thing it will do is hum.

OUT THE BACK SIDE OF THE MOTOR IS A SLOT IN THE SHAFT FOR A SCREWDRIVER , SEE IF YOU CAN TURN THE MOTOR OVER(BREAKER OFF !) YOU MAY HAVE BOUND THE IMPELLER OR IT COULD BE SET FOR 230 VOLTS AND YOU ARE RUNNING IT ON 115VOLT.....
IT MAY HAVE A BAD START CAP OR THE SWITCH MIGHT NEED CLEANING. THESE EMERSON MOTORS CAN BE HARD TO WORK ON DO TO THE HUGE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC PARTS

My pump is making a loud humming noise and when I turned it on would not come on , just hummed. Tried again later and eventually came on but still making noise. Do I need a new pump. It is about 5 years...

My Sunterra pump made that noise and I had a problem getting it to come back on after unpluggin to clean pre-filter each time. It was not long after that the plastic impeller sheared in pieces (the pump was only 1 year old and thankfully under warranty) My guess is that this is fixing to happen to yours as well. You are lucky to get 5 years. There was no reason for mine to come aparts. Uunterra sent me a replacement pump which had been slightly re-designed of the same 2000 gl size and the new one jsut did the same thing (only 2 1/2 months old) I called them again which in the meantime will mean my pond going witout filtration once again. I am getting very upset about this and will be looking for a good deal on a different brand pump.

Why does my pool motor keep burning out? I have replaced 2 new ones since march. I have a haward super pump and Emerson 2 hp motor

What is your line voltage to the motor; 115 or 230? The motors come out of the box at 230 if it is dual voltage and if you are connecting it to a 115 V line, it will overheat and eventually fail.

If you are connecting it to the correct line voltage and setting the motor to match; check to be sure your voltage is not dropping under load. Check both line to ground to ensure both lines are sound.

When replacing the motor, are the seals sound or have you replaced the pump seal at all? Is it leaking?

Are the motors failing electrically or mechanically?

New installed motor making noise but not pumping water

Most pumps need to be primed. You will need to fill the the to get the flow going. Or if that can't be done you will need to find a way to pressurize the system with air, to help pus the water through the lines.
