Question about 2011 Sym DD 50

Open Question

Kick start jammed

The bike wasn't starting so we kicked down the kick start and it sounded like it was grinding. it wouldn't release and dis engage. now it wont move at all and the electric start wont work either, the only thing it does is move the kick start when we push the electric start.

i had this exact problem with mine few months ago, it was dirt on the connectors to battery. I had to have the RAC out today as my batt died after it had been rode to work this morning. I think this model has many electrical issues!

The kick starter return spring has broken and will need to be replaced. Usually this spring is located inside the gearbox.

  1. Try depressing the brake handle when starting.
  2. The battery has not been charged.
  3. The battery is hooked up wrong. This is often the reason for blown fuses.
  4. There isn't enough gas or two-stroke oil in the scooter.
  5. There is a gas flow problem, especially on the Euro Scooter or Yamaha models.
  6. The spark plug wire is not connected.
  7. A low battery or bad relay can cause the scooter to only start by using the kick starter.
  8. There is no spark to the spark plug. The coil is bad and needs to be replaced.
  9. Turn the key to the "on" position.
You need to check for a spark. There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way is to remove the spark plug and put it back in the spark plug cap. Then ground it to the engine - you should be able to lay it against a non-painted portion of the engine. Make sure there is good metal-to-metal contact. In a semi darkened area, attempt to start the scooter. You should see a definite spark at the tip of the spark plug. It's hard to see in direct light. If the color of the spark is blue, that means it's a strong spark. A white color is less strong, and a yellow color is weak. Most scooter starting systems are a bit weak (compared to cars). Even a yellow spark should start your scooter just fine.
The spark must occur at the right time. Just about all scooters made since around 1980 have an electronic ignition. These systems can rarely be set. In general, the spark occurs just before the piston reaches the top of it's stroke. There is a slight delay between the spark plug fire and the fuel-air mixture ignition. That's why the spark occurs a little early. Most ignition systems have an advance unit build in. As the engine speeds up, the time of the spark retards a little bit. This helps the engine fire the mixture at the proper time

There are a lot of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carburetor that must be kept clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully, take the carburetor apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter). The carb has tiny passages that can get gummed up. Your scooter will not run correctly if the carburetor isn't completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store).
First, remove all of the rubber and gaskets or they will get damaged. After a 20 minute soaking in carb dip, I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar or a piano string, a strand of copper electrical wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're diligent.
If you have an electric choke, check it to make sure it works. Check the resistance between the wires - you should see around 10 ohms or less. Measure the length of the choke assembly. Remove the choke from the carb and plug the wires into a 12V source for 15 minutes. The choke body should be warm. Measure the length again - it should increase by around 1/8".
Next, consider whether your exhaust pipe is clogged. This is especially a problem with older two stroke scooters. The unburned fuel/oil mixture builds up in the exhaust pipe along with carbon over time. If the exhaust pipe is clogged, your scooter will run terribly or not at all. It can be difficult to tell if the exhaust pipe is clogged. The easiest way to tell is to remove it and try starting your scooter. It will be a bit loud - two strokes will sound like a chain saw. If it runs with the exhaust pipe off, you know that is the problem

with bairly any power it might just be you air and petrol mixture or to much two stroke if it is a 2 stroke either that or whiring problems it is common with sym mine has problems with wiring too !!! :)

Cant get clutch to engage after fiting new cable help please


the clutch may be stuck on. Put the bike in neutral, start the bike, run down the road looking like a fool jumping on and off the bike to kick it into 2nd gear and pumping clutch lever. Clutch should be free.

It might also be worth checking if your pushrod has a ball bearing in the end, I had one on mine, replace the clutch plates and it wouldn't work with the ball bearing in :)

My 2001 sunfire starts fine.but after i drive for about half hour it will stall and wnt start again for half hour.the oil light stays on when this happens.wassup with this?


This happened with my Sunfire. It was the radiator. The engine wasn't cooling, but the sensor wasn't showing that it was overheating. So the engine would start when it was cool, but as soon as it got hot, then if I stopped it wouldn't start again.

Just did top end on 02 cr80rb. Fired up was running great. Than through the gears started loosing power in lower rpms. Stopped bike and than it wouldn't kick back over. Checked plug for possible foul,...

Hi i have a 1995 yz250 the bike was fine till one day it wouldn't kick only bump start so I cleaned th carb and the filter then the bike started 1st 2nd kick about 20 mins of riding later the bike...


Hi mate I would be getting someone to check resistance on your stator its a simple test only requires a multimeter but hard to explain on here - From what your saying I think this test could save your headache!
Once stators fail they can be completely unreliable such as allow you to push start but not kick start or allow you to start but as soon as bike warms up fails completely until cold again they even can give false reading when you test to see if spark is at the plug as you see spark but is not strong enough or is sparking at wrong time... I have had bikes come in my work shop where guys have been confident has spark and they have rebuilt and replaced everything you can imagine but all it was the stator failing with not enough resistance..

My bike starts no problem drives great but when i stop the bike and turn it of it wont start ihave to jump it in gear and of she goesits a 00 125 intruder lc its been sitting up for 4years veeery clean...


Sounds like the cut out switch on the kick stand. The bike shouldn't start if you have the kick stand down. Check the kick stand is fully retracted and that the switch is disengaging OK. Maybe the stand is slightly loose & its making contact even when retracted. Otherwise check the kill switch. Both parts are available cheaply on ebay & easy to replace.

JUST BOUGHT A '73 XLCH THAT SAT FOR 2 YEARS BECAUSE THE OLD MAN THAT OWNED IT COULDN'T KICK START IT ANYMORE. IT STARTS RIGHT UP BY PUSH STARTING IT, BUT KICKING IT IS ANOTHER STORY. IT'S GETTING FIRE...


You probably need to adjust your valves. Ironhead Sportsters are equipped with solid lifters and must be adjusted with zero backlash. If one of the pushrods is adjusted just a bit tight and holds a valve open even slightly, the bike is almost impossible to start with the kickstarter.

To adjust the valves, the bike must be stone cold. Take the spark plugs out, raise the rear wheel of the ground, and put the transmission in fourth gear. Turn the engine over by bumping the rear wheel in the normal direction of rotation. Bring the piston of one of the cylinders up to top dead center on the Compression stroke. Pop the pushrod tube covers and check the pushrods. You should be able to spin both pushrods with your fingers. If not, adjust the pushrod so taht it's tight. Then back it off to where you can just spin it with your fingers. Keep in mind that on a Sportster, it's better to have the pushrods slightly loose than tight. Once you get that cylinder's pushrods adjusted, do the same thing with the other cylinder.

Now, once you get this done, starting your bike is simply a matter of figuring what works with it. I've always said that kickstarting a Harley, especially a Sportster, is a ritual. Some bikes like for you to milk the throttle twice, kick the engine through twice with the choke on and ignition off, then turn on the ignition and kick it. Other bikes seem to want only one milk of the throttle, one kick with the ignition off, and then kick it. Each bike seems to have it's own particular ritual that you must figure out to get reliable starting. I'd try milk the throttle once, put the choke on, kick it through with the ignition off once, then turn the ignition on and kick. If the bike spits back through the carb, you need to start all over again. If you get the engine flooded, hold the throttle wide open and kick until it fires.

One other thing about a Sportster. Did the old man you bought it from have a limp in his right leg? A Sportster is notorious for "slipping through" when you try to start it. The result is that all your weight comes down on your knee without any resistance. The result is your knee tries to bend backwards, the way it wasn't designed to do. This can tear ligaments and cartilage in the knee and it even has it's own name, "Sportster Knee". Be careful.

It sounds like your kickstart return spring has gone. The noise you hear with the kickstart still down is because it is still engaged. Dont let this happen, return it to the upright position. You will need to take the case cover off and have a look. On many bikes this spring can be replaced very simply, on others you may need tp strip the engine further. It would be worth investing in a workshop manual.

The grinding noise could be many things none good.
Has the bike enough oil & is it being pumped round OK (does the radiator heat up?)
If there was no grinding noise on the way home it could well have been the kick-start mechanism; as the footpeg fouled the kick-start, its mechanism didn't pivot far enough round to disengage from the ratchet. So the noise you heard was the mechanism returning but still in contact with the ratchet. This is the most likely answer.

When you adjust the decompression valve it actually depresses an engine inlet valve. You may well have adjusted it too far leaving the inlet valve slightly open as it fires, giving you back-firing in the inlet tract

How i start my yz426 2002 yamaha the bike has a good compresion the carbulator true gas and the spare plug is good


these bikes are the hardest bikes to fix, easiest thing, kick the bike super slow until you piston is at TDC, you will know because it will be hard to kick, then pull the compression release down and as you start to kick release the compression release. NOT an easy task starting a 426 but good luck
