225, runs but no rev will not go.

Checking fuel flow seems to be there, is it the valves maybe, or a key way shearing in the flywheel?

    When did the problem start? more background please i don't blame people trying to fix their motorcycles but its much easier to give a reply if we know some background on the bike such as has the bike been sitting for months without being started in most cases the fuel has gumed up the slow speed jet and circuit.

    My first thought is fuel too. Pulled and cleaned carb, this old 4 wheeler sits most of the summer as I have a newer 4x4 Polaris but when the women wants to go she can ride solo. So long as working. Fuel changed, keyway okay but did find burn in coils but think that to be why not charging propper, as I have spark. Intake valve seems okay too, must reclean carb and try again.

    Other thing I'll look into is the air intake to see if some vermin have plugged the intake.

    Cleaned carb with care, found gunk here and there, but still not running much better, runs and dies,have made sure air flow okay, and vent line clear. But still not getting to far.

    After recleaning carb checking spark, then the plug after trying and spark again, have come to the conclusion, weak spark irregular and shot CDI unit.

    That is a valid conclusion. You would likely have seent he arcover in the dark if the magneto/ignitor were visible. This happens to be a common issue with newer Homelite chainsaws. btw.

    Funniest thing, I can have this motor run for five minutes the dies when trying to give a little throttle, try checking the exaust valve now, Still hoping there's a magic cure that somone knows.

    Will also not start till recooled after running, even with the fuel turned off,or on.

    If the exhaust valve is stuck closed, no fuel/air mixture can enter the combustion chamber, so no. If the balve is ditorted or a valve seat came loose, it could run, but the exhaust pipe would turn red hot after a short period of time. If it will not start when hot, the exhaust valve could be leaking enough to prevent the air fuel mixture from igniting at the right time so you head popping like it wants to start, but would not start.

    Stiill finding that the spark seems to disappear. Strato coil test low to 1 okay on other. Do not know if that would be the factor for the problem, as this thing should run directly off the battery, I thought.

Obstructed air intake can cause that problem as can a leak in the induction system. The diaphragm of the carb "might" sometimes do that, because the air impulses that make those work diminish as the throttle opens. And also do not rule out ignition. Check it in the dark with engine running and look for arc over. Also check to make sure the spark plug is gapped correctly.

Far more likely is that the woodriff key , on the flywheel, is slightly stripped or sheared, due to sudden stoppage of engine. Remove shroud and flywheel (may need puller or help to do so) Check flywheel key(woodriff) to see if it is ok or partly sheared.

As far a valves, I doubt that they are adjustable. Look up gap for that engine and check, at maximum opening (Turn by hand )with feeler gauge (metal thickness gauge) open adjustment on valve. You will see how when checking the gap. Personally I still don't believe that they are adjustable.

sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.

Definitely sounds like a thermal issue, likely with the ignition module.

Try this: Wait for it to cool, then start it up again. Run it as you normally would, and wait for it to die. When it does die, pull the spark plug boot off the plug, use a spark gap tester, and see if you still have spark. If you don't, then suspect the ignition coil, perhaps the disable wire might be grounding out as it snakes around and eventually to the off switch.

If you still have spark, then check the fuel shutoff / anti-diesel valve (if equipped) on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. Look for damaged wiring. When you turn the ignition on, and try to start, this valve should have 12 volts going to it to allow fuel to flow. Otherwise, look for problem between valve and on switch.

Another area to check, especially if it tends to backfire, is that the woodruff key (shear pin) on the flywheel isn't damaged (partially sheared).

Shearing of flywheel pin on starting 12 hp snapper


When you the key this time, put the flywheel on first then the key but this time use a little grit between the flywheel and crankshaft. Something like grinding compound. It will keep the flywheel from moving plus make sure you torque down the flywheel nut good.

I have a cub cadet push mower with a 173cc ohv engine. i was cutting grass the other day and fire came out of the muffler and now it acts like its not firing maybe like it jumed time but not sure. thanks...


most likely a sheared flywheel key, pull the cover off the flywheel and remove the nut that holds the flywheel on. The key slot in the flywheel should line up with the key in the crankshaft if not pull the flywheel and install a new key, or take it to a small engine repair and they will do it for you. If the key is good, reassemble the flywheel nut etc and check for spark at the spark plug and see if the spark plug is wet with gas if you have spark and gas and the flywheel key not sheared and it still won't run, you may have an internal problem

Backfires through the air cleaner


This usually means a bent or sheared key in the flywheel. Remove the shroud exposing the flywheel buy a 6" flywheel puller and remove the nut for the flywheel and attach the three jaw puller remove the flywheel and replace the flywheel key. The only other thing that causes this popping through the carb is a burnt intake valve this is a job for a lawn mower shop.

Most likely your flywheel key is sheared throwing the timing off. Pull flywheel and inspect key.
