Hi ......... sounds like the petrol is igniting in the pipe, could be valve needs reground (carryout a compression check), leak in the exhaust system (all gaskets & joints good ?). What colour is the spark plug ? Have you recently put a new pipe, filter or re jetted the bike ?

First of all, there is no jetting the bike, because the '05 Suzuki C90 is fuel injected. Secondly, the popping sound is indicative of the Suzuki C90 line. To minimize the popping noises, perform the pair valve removal and switch to NGK Iridium spark plugs. Also, look into a Stage III kit for your bike and find a fuel map that best suits your needs. It won't eliminate all of the popping, but it will get rid of about 95% of it.

SOURCE: backfiring

backfiring means you have an air leak or a lean mixture. Look for leaks at the header pipes or perhaps a crack in the exhaust.
Cold air getting into the exhaust is usually what causes the backfire noise.
You may have a lean engine running situation but the bike would have other issues besides the backfire.
Let me know if you are having any other issues or if it just the backfire.

Hello i have a 1987 honda shadow when i down shift the moter back firers my freinds tell me it has aftermarket exuast pipes on it. so do i have to change jets in the carb. The spark plugs are tan to white...

If there are aftermarket exhaust pipes on your bike, the carburetor should have been rejetted at the same time. It does sound like a lean issue, especially where your spark plugs are tan/white. It's not going to hurt anything to be a little lean, just have an annoying backfire. The only time you should have to worry is if your plugs have no color but white and it backfires while riding, not only downshifting. If you are concerned about the backfiring, I would suggest changing jets, especially the pilot jet. The pilot jet is where you are getting your backfire from. When you let off the throttle and downshift, the main jet circuit is closed and fuel is pulled through the pilot circuit. The pilot circuit cannot provide as much fuel as the main circuit, especially when the motor pulls higher rpms on downshift. This will cause a lean backfire. I know it has been several months since you posted this and you may have this corrected already, but I just stumbled upon your question. Hope this helps, Daniel.

SUZUKI 2005 DR650SE DUAL SPORT RUNS GREAT BUT AT IDLE THERE IS A SLIGHT POPPING IN IDLE RYTHYM, ALSO BACKFIRES SLIGHTLY WHEN DOWNSHIFTING...HELP

Carefully check your intake manifold for leaks, cracks, separation. An air leak on the intake side between the carburetor and the cylinder head would be the cause of popping on the intake side. If there are leaks in the exhaust system, an o-ring seal in the head, or a seal between the head pipe and the muffler, this can cause popping or backfiring in the exhaust.

What do you do if the bike has fuel injection and is backfiring?

You would check the intake manifold for an air-leak, or check the fuel-mapping to make sure that the air mixture is not too lean. You can detect an air-leak by simply spraying around the manifold area with WD40 and listening for a change in idle from the motor.

Backfire on downshifting

Slightly rich mixture can cause fuel to run into exhaust and cause "popping" on rundown.
Won't cause any problems other than fuel economy and at worst( if extremely bad ) early exhaust failure.
Just turn the fuel mixture down a little.

Backfiring when the throttle is closed shows a lean mixture. Either you, or your mechanic should take a look at the mixture, and there's a 99% chance that that was the cause of your problem :)
