I have found the fuel goes off in the carbs if left too long ie a month you could try draining carbs

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand a couple of possibilities considering it is a 1989 model:

  • ignition switch - check if the coils are getting +12 even when cranking;
  • CDI - check if the electronic ignition is getting +12 even when cranking;
  • compression test - worn out rings and/or intake valves could cause low compression when cold. Test compression on both cold and warm engine.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

    Incidentally, if it is not cranking, either weak battery or starter relay/solenoid. Another to consider is the starter motor or more specifically the carbon brushes.

Don't pull the chock out all the way, more like 3/4. The clicking you are hearing is a low battery & or corrided contacts. The battery its self may may need to be replaced. If its a cell battery, one or more cells may be bad. Take it to a battery outlet & let them test the cells. Most do not charge for this service.

Sounds like the carbs were not properly cleaned or set up. Choke should cause the cold start rpms to be higher than what you are experiencing. Application of choke to a warmed up engine will usually cause the engine to stall.

1989 cbr250r - hard to start cold.

Check to make sure the choke is working properly, then check all your fuel lines for brittleness.air cracks. They need to hold the pressure required to bring the fuel to the carb.

It would not hurt to thoroughly clean and gap the plugs, but after all this, try using a spray can of carb cleaner to spray through the carb and clean out build ups of gum and varnish. When you do, run at a rather fast idle, because the introduction of the carb cleaner will bog the engine down. After all, it is burning gunk. THEN clean or replace the plugs.

Good luck!

sounds like you have a blocked jet in your carb you need to get it cleaned and a new spark plug would help.

Cbr 125 choke problem

It sounds like the choke line may not have been routed correctly when the new one was installed. Remove the gas tank and check to see that the line is not being stretched anywhere along the way AND that the gas tank when re-installed is not stretching the line. The line may have been kinked when installed. Look at the mechanical movement of the choke at the carb. Does it operate freely? Remove the air filter and look inside the center of the carb, (you may need to use a small mirror for this), does it look like the choke is opening and closing properly when the choke is moved on and off?
