Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand a couple of possibilities considering it is a 1981 model:

  • check the usual, if it is not cranking, either weak battery or starter relay/solenoid. Another to consider is the starter motor or more specifically the carbon brushes;
  • ignition switch - check if the coils are getting +12 even when cranking;
  • CDI - check if the electronic ignition is getting +12 even when cranking;
  • if it is still a point type ignition, check the contact points, gap, dwell and the condenser;
  • compression test - worn out rings and/or intake valves would cause low compression making the bike hard if not impossible to start.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.

Wont start

There is a screen in the tank. It may be stopped up. If the bike runs on "reserve" setting I would check that first.

Kawazaki kdx 125 wont start

KICK HARDER TRY PULL STARTING IT..IN SECOND GEAR..DOES IT HAVE ENOUGH COMPRESSION TO START?IT SHOULD START PULLING IT...START OFF WITH NO THROTTLE THAN IF NOT STARTING CRACK THE THROTTLE SO LIGHTLY AND SHE SHOULD FIRE OFF WHILE IN GEAR BEING PULLED OF COURSE BE CARE FUL NOT TO RUN INTO. WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..

No ignition spark after battery change

Are you sure it has no spark or are assuming that because it cranks and wont start?? It may just be stale gas if you have spark. Personally, IF it really has no spark before I tried anything else I 'd charge the battery. Some bikes are EXTREMELY intolerant of low voltage levels and while you may have enough juice to turn it over, it may not have enough to run the coils,ignitors,etc. . It ran when you put the new battery in so that tells me its more than likely OK otherwise and the battery may have simply discharged a tad from sitting and now cranking it. Trickle charge it (2 amp) overnight and try it again.

1999 ZRx will not start

Hi Ken. Does your bike have spark. Does it sound like it wants to start. Kawasaki leads screw in to the cap that goes to over the spark plug. What happens is overtime is they pull out and the sparks not strong enough to fire the engine. Its a common problem with them. You need to lift the tank up/off and re-screw the leads back to the caps. If you unscrew them first and trim the ends that may also help. Hope this fixes the problem.

Kawazaki gpz carbs will fire when you put petrol directlt in them

Check the routing of the wires under the tank. Also check the wire connections. It sounds like the installation of the tank is pulling on the wires causing a momentary disconnection of a power wire.
Alternate to that, are the spark plug wires grounding against the tank?

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Kawazaki z400 1981 spark not enough,wiring a mess

Hi .... Is this the twin or the four cylinder ? I'd suspect a condensor/points on the twin. Wiring, without seeing it, I'd can't comment on ................. a manual, multimeter & a bit of time would sort it out.
