Was riding home from work when it started to lose power, cough and sputter. Will not idle. I've owned this bike since new, has 25,000 miles and never gave me any trouble til now.

Sometimes the dealers will remove a wheel to change a tire and only back the adjusters off enough to get the wheel off (ie 4 full turns each). When they are done they return the adjusters the same amount of turns to tension the belt and never really align the wheel properly.This could be what the problem is.

If it was stored with fuel in the tank:
1. The fuel filter should be replaced
2. You may to replace the fuel delivery system coming out of the tank
3. Remove the plug in the carb and reset the idel mixture
I just bought one store for 6 years - my issue is the bike will n ot idel but runs on the road like a bat out hell.

could posibly be a problem with your stator

Most fuel injected motorcycles do start up in a "fast idle" mode. Although I don't know much about fuel injection on Harleys (H-D will not tell you much about it unles you are one of their technicians), I don't think the system is equipped with an engine temp sensor. Since the crank case sensor get it's pulses from pockets cut into the outer edge of the left side flywheel half, the sensor will have oil on it.
