Hi Anonymous, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. There is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/4 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time, final adjustment should be made with the engine at normal operating temperature. What is the correct fuel mixture for a harley davidson softtail 2001

The correct fuel air mixture for your softail is 13.5:1 - 14:1. If you stay closer to the 13.5:1 end of the range, the engine will run cooler. The carb's stock slow speed jet is a number #45. You can go to a #48 or #50 and get a better idle. Don't change the main jet. Carefully drill out the anti-tamper plug that covers the idle mixture adjustment screw just behind the float bowl and adjust for the highest smoothest idle.

How to replace the choke on a 2000 fxstd

To replace the "choke" on the carb of your 2000 Softail, you much take the carb off the engine. Take the air filter cover, air filter, and air filter backing plate off the engine. Loosen and disconnect the throttle cables and fuel hose. Loosen the nut on the backside of the "choke" knob and take it out of it's slot in the bracket. Twist and pull the carb out of the intake manifold bringing the "choke cable" with it. Once out, use a 14 mm open end wrench to unscrew the cable and plunger assembly. You'll have to swap the spring and plunger from your old cable to the new cable and reinstall in reverse order. Always install a new carb seal where the carb pushes back into the intake. Make sure the throttle works smoothly and snaps shut when you relaease the throttle grip. Never lubricate the "choke" cable. Be careful when tightening the nut on the backside of the cable knob end. The assembly is made of plastic and breaks easily. To adjust the tension on the cable. turn the knurled ring just behind the choke knob.

Filter is in the fuel tank attached to the fuel petcock. Check your intake gaskts for an air leak. Get the bike running and squirt some brake clean near the intake seals and see if the bike dies or idle increases, but dont squirt too much to get sucked in the air cleaner. Also check the vacuum lines going from the fuel petcock to the carb for dry rotted or loose connections.

Sounds like the carbs idle circuit are clogged from sitting or bad fuel . Try Some carb cleaner in it an see what it does after a tank fuel . Or take to a Harley shop to let a tech check the carbs an maybe give it a tune-up.

I have gas shooting from the carburater directly into the air filter and subsequently leaking out onto clothing and bike. Any ideas what makes this happen.

Your carburetor is equipped with an accelerator pump that shoots a squirt of gasoline into the carb when you twist the throttle. There is a brass nozzle located in the very front of the throat of the carb that squirts the fuel. This nozzle is supposed to be positioned to squirt the fuel inwards into the carb. Is there a chance someone has turned this nozzle. If you look at it very closely, you can see the small **** or hole that the fuel comes out of.

Now, are you running your bike without the air cleaner on the engine. Although the accelerator pump nozzle should be set to direct the fuel into the carb, the air flow generated by the running engine should be pulling the fuel into the carb as well.

If you've got gasoline coming out of the carb and the engine is not running and you're not cranking on the throttle, you've got a problem with the needle and seat in the carb. Probably a piece of trash caught in the seat. You'll need to take the float bowl off of the carb to fix this problem.

You could also have a bad diaphragm in the accelerator pump. If the diaphragm gets a hole in it. fuel will flow up the tower that the accelerator pump actuator rod goes down into. While you've got the float bowl off, go ahead and replace this diaphragm for the accelerator pump as well. They're not that expensive.

Where is my air/fuel mix on my 2001 Harley Davidson heritage classic softail classic?

It should be on the bottom of the carb. If it has never been adjusted before, there is a plug in the hole. You need to run a small self taping screw into the plug and then pull it out to access the mixture screw.

Engine will not throttle up

the red and white screws are the air and fuel mixture needles they may need adjustment if you are getting plenty of fuel to the carb. note that newer walbro carbs these mix set screws can only be adjuted very little. they will break if you twist to much. but firt when you took the carb apart was the fuel metering diaphram crisp or was it still flexable? ( black gasket thing under side cover . it has a small metal botton in the middle of it. if this does not flex freely then you need a walbro carb gasket set. mabe 5 to 10 bucks.

Stalling problems on softail

I have a 1987 Softail and had a similar problem, but worse. That is some good advise to check the tank screen, I bet you will find your problem there. I found my problem in the tank with a clogged screen, stuff in tank so I flushed it with some clean fuel. I also flushed the fuel line cause I found trash in the carb, so then I rebuilt the carb (on your S&S you can take the float bowel off with out removing the carb to check for trash that may have gotten past the screen in the tank). I'm big on overkill though,you may only have to work on the tank.
