Hi Brett
If done carefully, second hand gear is ok so long as it has been handled properly, and the second hand top end is a complete kit, of KNOWN origin, you could get away with not replacing the rings, would depend on just how much you wanted to compromise the bikes repair. At any rate, you get what you pay for. New rings is a small cost against having to tear the engine down again if the rebuild ends up with no compression or blowing smoke,.... I would have put new rings in it.. Do a compression check across all cylinders to see if all looks ok.
If the carbies came of a wrecked bike(as did the other bits, they may well have issues with sitting around/stale fuel. Hopefully your mechanic DID clean up properly and throw in a gasket/service kit for carbueration.
He may not have included a tuneup in the price for the repairs, and the bike may need this also if the carbs are off another model(exhaust system on doner bike may be different also upsetting the tune).
I would be going back to the guy that did the work and see what he is prepared to do for you, or cut a deal on tuning the machine up.If you aren't too happy with the outcome you have now, time to find a new mechanic.
Aint nothing like a freshly tuned motocycle;)
Good luck with getting it sorted, happy to talk to you more. Cheers
regards robotek

I have a 1980 rm125 it does not start it just back fires

usually a 2 stroke will chuff/backfire out of the exhaust if it low on compression, did you put the rings in the right grooves and up the right way and is the piston in the right way around as there is a front and back ,the ring pegs are supposed to face the inlet side of the barrel.

surely the bike is fuel injected, which might mean the fuel pump is playing up , which could be a pressure sensor in the system, you might need to get the computor scanned to see whats faulty

Bike wont go past 10,000 rpms. power just shuts out.

These bikes have rev limiters to keep you from blowing the motor. they are supposed to do just that, shut power off if you rev the engine too hard. Usually it cuts out and re-starts very rapidly and you get sort of a Vroom, Vroom , Vroom sound that lets you know you are reving it too much. If you continue to push the motor it will shut power off. 10,000 rpm is a lot of rpm and this could cause major issues with the motor. you don't want a piston to come loose at this rpm!

I'm helping a guy who rebuilt a 1983 sportster, the problem we are having is with timing. with the piston on tdc, the mark or line on the flywheel in timing hole and all the marks lined on the cams it...

first things first you should buy a book. your timing is off and here is why. you don't put the front piston in tdc to set the cams. there is a mark on the pinion that needs to be at about 11 o'clock and then the cam marks line up with that mark. pay no attention to the tdc mark.

My yamaha xt600e starts to to choke/stall like if iit lacks gasoline every time i pass 5k rpm in 2nd,3rd,4th or 5th gear. What could it be?

You may very likely have an issue with your carbies. The jets may be gumming up with sediment over time or secondary carby needle is worn or sticking. A carby cleaning execise may be a cure or a service at your bike dealer if your not mechanically minded. The carbies are a little more complicated than the normal single carby and have more jets and slides, as well as a delayed secondary carby linkage.

Try the site below for a free download of your bikes manual which will have some troubleshooting tips and some service for the carby's.

Cheers!
