Take the starter out and see if the starter drive gear is stripped or just need lub for the bendix( the thing that makes the gear move forward to engage the other gear.

The starter doesn't drag the engine, making a machine gun like sound.

Hi Las, first when checking anthing in the starter circuit you must make sure the battery connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends and has a 12.5 volt or better charge. It must not fall below 9 volts during the cranking procedure with a volt meter hooked up. If it does fall below 9 volts do a proper load test on the battery and replace if necessary. Second replace the starter relay cheap $6 and make sure it's well grounded and getting 11.5 volts or better to activate. Third remove the back cover of the solenoid and de-arc/refurbish the contact plate and shoes making sure they are tight. If it still chatters replace the solenoid. Good luck

My bike wont start. it just makes a noise like a machine gun

It sounds to me like your battery is bad. Take the battery to your local automotive parts house and ask them to load test it for you. What it sounds like is you have a cell shorting out in the battery. This would result in the voltage on the battery dropping below 12 volts when you attempt to start the bike. With the voltage that low, the solenoid "hold in coil" cannot hold in the solenoid plunger to engage the starter motor. The result is that "machine gun" noise you hear with the solenoid plunger going in and out rapidly.

Engine rattles

It sounds like a carb problem. Remove it, desassemble it, clean it, make sure the brass jet are well fixed and that everything is in place...
Nothing to do with the timing chain usually...

My Kawasaki Z 750 (2005) won't start. Starter

If the Tach is showing some RPMs then it must be turning the motor over, if the bike is just coming out of storage it may be gummed up in the fuel system. try turning the fuel petcock off and then on a couple of times. try to start the bike. Failing that, you may have to drain the fuel and replace it with new fuel.
if neither of these work you may have to consult a local mechanic for a spark test and fuel test.

Honda Deauville will not start.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The click is significant. It indicates that the starting relay is engaging but for some reason, the starter motor is not cranking. This could either be a faulty starter relay (particularly the contacts) or a faulty starter motor (specifically, the carbon brushes). To determine which:
  • with the side covers off, expose the starter relay particularly the 2 large terminals;
  • have somebody start the bike normally using the key and button start switch;
  • determine if indeed the clicking is coming from the starter relay;
  • while the start button is still pressed, jump the 2 big terminals;
  • if the engine cranks, then the internal contacts of the starter relay are corroded or burned;
  • if the engine will not crank, then the starter motor is faulty or it can not turn the engine..
A few additional ideas:
  • externally charge the battery;
  • drain the tank and carbs of stale fuel;
  • refill with fresh fuel;
  • remove the plugs, center stand the bike, engage 1st gear, rotate rear wheel to exercise engine.
  • Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

No starter engagement 2005 Silverado 1100

I would seriouly look at the starter clutch, the 1100 yamaha cruiser motors are notorious for this problem way back when the same motor was in the viragos and the xvs 1100 vstars, yamaha have tried to fix the prob over the years but stillhavn't got it right. if it just spins and whirs without engaging the engine, but sometime will kick in engagement, it sounds like your starter clutch is on it's way out. they cost from yamaha around $450- 500 ea plus around $350 to fit you have to include a $30 gasket in all that.
