The intermediate cog will spin freely one way but not the other, works on a principle similar to a centrafugal clutch.

How to fix the yamaha krypton starter not engaging the engine

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. When pushing the electric start button, the starter spins but does not engage to turn the motor

Starter motor spins, but does not engage
  1. Check the starter motor for a seized or binding pinion gear.
  2. Remove the flywheel inspection plate and check for a damaged ring gear.

Starter motor turn but wont engage

It has a starter clutch on the fly wheel. You will need to remove the left side case cove to access it. You will need to pull the flywheel with a puller as the starter clutch is behind the flywheel

Starter spins freely, will not engage

there is a coil that pushes starter out to engage it to flywheel and a motor part that turns it. check to se if the coil part is good or hooked up.

Ring gear spins freely in both directions when starter is remove

Very unlikely that ring gear has separated from clutch. If this model has clutch dogs on ring gear ( ring gear not permanently fixed to housing) then one or all of the tension springs have weakened and don't allow ring gear to lock in one direction.
