This is a bike i've built from various parts a Suzuki GS500F on a 2004 frame. On completion and start up I cannot get it to run smoothly. It seems as if it's only firing on one cylinder - the left! In my suzuki twin's right cylinder there's a spark but no combustion. Left one fires ok. I've checked coils, carbs, mixture screw everything on them. Manifold. Air leaks. Checked tappets, OK! Could it be low compression? That's my next job. The engine's only done 10,000 miles and 5 years old.

Check the valve adjustment. If a valve is standing open just a little, the compression will be too low to start the engine. Check fuel delivery by dribbling a little gasoline into the carb and try starting the bike. If it starts and runs for a second or two, you're not getting fuel into the cylinders. Check you carb again.

the only other things I can think of mate without looking, is put your hand over the silencer at tickover (when engine cold) and see if the the exhaust is blowing from somewhere. A new gasket should sort that. If you dropped it on the timing cover side it might be worth a look in there to see if there is any damage.
good luck

Problem solved! Did a compression test, it was very very low so tested for the cause by pouring oil into the cylinder which it improved the compression considerably. Result. Piston broken i would think.
Result. I mean a piston ring!
