U need to adjust the mixture it normally a little screw on the bottom of the carb by the float bowl somewere the ones on the side are normally for overflow and tick over. if u not to sure try googling for an exploded diagram of the carb and that will tell u were it is.

4 stroke engine.has not been run for a few years. when running smoke comes from the exhaust

These bikes are famous for this. The horizontal mounting if the cylinders allows for oil to seep past the rings. The longer the bike stays on the sidestand, the more oil will pass by. Also, you stated the bike has not run for years, the rings are possibly stuck in the groves, or the cylinder walls may be corroded. If possible, keep the bike on the centerstand, and allow the engine to warm up completely. Then change the oil and ride the bike for a while. I think you will see an improvement as you rev the engine through the gears, and the rings re-seat to the cylinder walls. You may want to change the plugs also, as they may have fouled from the oil. Good luck, and safe riding.

Sounds like the battery may be either low or shot. Place it on a trickle charger overnite to see if it will take a charge. Once you get the bike to run without needing jumper cables to keep it running, check the charging system. Easiest way to do this is to get a battery voltage reading with a multi meter before starting the bike. After the bike is running, place the meter leads on the battery and work the throttle to get the revs up to about 2000. Meter reading should be somewhere around 13.8 to 14.2 voltsDC. It not close to these readings, you have a charging system problem.

I have an 88 virago 535 ill b driving along and it will back fire and lose all power and if I roll start it affter letting motor die completely sumtimes it will *** out of it and other times just...

Go ahead and pull jet out of carb if your already taking float bowl off. When you take float bowl of carb off mine as well pull the jett out and make sure you can see all the way through the jett with no debris or gunk in it.Just spray with cab cleaner if its really bad you may have to soak it in a small bowl or anything it can soak in. Let it soak for good 12 hrs if it was gunky and didnt wanna just blow out of jett. If jett is completely clogged in the jett i would go ahead and do a carb overhaul ( gaskets, orings, sometimes diaphrams , check settings) while your waiting for jett to finish soaking in deh chemicals. good practice or something fun to have a kids help with. My 11 yr old son can rebuild a dirt bike from just helping me out so i think its a good thing to pass on knowledge the younger generations. I started my little brother at 11 and he can work on anything with a motor never know who your gonna help find their passion.

sounds like you have to clean out the carbys. you should be able to at least drain them without taking them apart.

Have to hold clutch to keep bike from dieing

clutch plate adjusment or cable adjustment, it sounds like the clutch is staying engaged, try loosening the cable on the clutch until there is lots of slack init and try to start the bike, if it jerks forward then you are going to have to adjust/replace the internal clutch plates hope this helps

I have a dtr 125 its bogging out before the powervalve has chance to kickin it revs fine in neutral but when i ride it i have to change gears quick and will only do about 45mph

i have the same problem. i have recently bought a 1998 dtr, but when we had a closer look at the engin, it wasnt worth keeping. so managed to get a 2006 engin. i fitted this. but the bike seems reallys slow. I then opend the powervalve. but the bike boggs out just as i get in to the power band. i was told to re jett the bike to a 260. so will be getting that done soon. will tell you what it goes like mate.
