The cause of this in most gas engines is a plugged jet in the carb. It must be taken apart and thoroghly cleaned. The jet must be unplugged with a stiff wire or paper clip if it will fit. Carb cleaner alone will not do the trick.

SOURCE: I have a 05' Yamaha

Has the bike been parked for two weeks or more? If so, the fuel has most likely gummed up and plugged fuel passages and jets. Might try adding 1/2 to full can of SeaFoam to existing fuel in the tank, crank the bike and run (with choke if you have to) at a high idle for several minutes. Shut it down and let set for an hour or so allowing the SeaFoam to work. Start bike again and run at high idle again, trying to run it without the choke. If this doesn't work, then the carb probablyneeds a tear down and a manuel cleaning and reset.

SOURCE: 1979 yamaha xs400 will only run on full choke as

it is either a float problem with the carbs or a jetting issue. i would check to make sure you have flow thru your carbs .

SOURCE: my 2006 yamaha v star 650 will run with choke on

You have a vacumm hose loose look for small hose no connecter to anything - should solve it - I had a similar problem with a ZX9r the other day - same would run fine on choke not idle or start without it

Good Luck

SOURCE: Yamaha TW 200 starts but won't run.

If the bike has sat for a long period of time without being run - the gas that is sitting in the carb(s) will shellac.. Then the carb(s) would need to be cleaned and "rebuilt"..

Why is my dt125 overheating after my personal rebuild? After about ten minuets my heat warning came on bearing in mind I was going slow in each gear to run it in, stopped to feel it and it was v hot!

through experience i can tell you that dt125 r's are prone to warping heads and even barrels can distort at the studs.get the head and barrel back off and get them checked or skimmed minimally to be on the safe side,i would also leave the thermostat out.

Yamaha 2005 v star classic will only start with choke on put in new battery still same problem push choke in stops running

sounds as though its a carb jetting problem. srip and check the carb or get it done if you are not confident enough to undertake the project.

Generator only runs with the Choke all the way out. Stops when pushed in.

Only a suggestion. Sounds like the carberator has trash in it. You need to try to clean out the carb and check out the gas tank to make sure that that there is no trash in the tank. When opening the choke lever that allows another way for the fuel to get to the engine in order for it to run.
