I have a 2004 Sporter 1200 custom. I just put a new battery in it 3 months ago. The bike hasn't been started in 3 weeks. The first couple of times I started it, it sounded like it was going to kick on for about 3 seconds. Now all I get is a clicking sound. Any help would be appreciated.

This could be a number of problems so I would start with the easiest to fix and work my way up.

  • 1. Make sure your battery is fully charged by hooking up a Batter charger or maintainer. If the battery is suspect pull it from the bike and bring it to Autozone/Pep Boys/Garage to have a load test done to it. If all this is good the battery is not the problem.
  • 2. Check your battery connections and making sure they're tight.
  • 3. Check the connections on the starter. If you need to put a wrench on these you should disconnect the Negative wire on the battery so you don't arc out.
  • 4. Check the wiring between the starter and the relay. These have been known to burn out from time to time.
If it's still not starting the troubleshooting gets more involved and requires a Voltmeter and a Service Manual is very helpful and can save you a lot of money in Service Bills.

Good Luck

Your battery is most likely dead. Try removing the battery from the bike and charging it with the appropriate charger overnight first (you might try taking it to have it tested while you have it out). You can try jump starting, but bike alternators are much smaller than cars so I would NOT have the donor vehicle running if you try it. That way you will know if your starter is really bad or just your battery. I bet a new battery will solve your problem for now, but why did it take only a month to go dead? Small electrical drain (parking light maybe?)

How to change spark plugs on a 02 harley sportster 1200 custom ?

With the engine cold, remove the wires from the spark plugs, then use a spark plug socket to remove them. Set the gap on the new plugs at 0.040 (forty thousandths). Give the threads a light coating of anti seize and install the new plugs. Re-install the wires and you are done.

My 1993 1200 sportster did work fine till I had to lay it down quite hard. after laying up for a couple of months I started to put it back together.first of all I got idiot lights but only click on pushing...

If you've got circuit breakers tripping, you've still got a short somewhere. Pay particular attention to either of the handlebar switch housings. There are quite a number of wires running to each side and any one can easily be pinched and cause a short. I'd focus on the right side with the "Run-Stop" switch in it.

Good Luck

Stops running when very hot

I would change the coil, the ignition coils fail when hot. I ran my XLCH 1000 for about a month on a Citroen Diane 4 coil. (It is the same coil!) no street cred though as it has a different fixing point and no chrome cover.

Starter button began to turn over and the stopped.

Hello. Since your experiemcing an entire electrical failurte I would start by looking at your fuses. If they are all fine, then you might want to check to see if there is a short in the starter button, which seems to be the issue, but may not be. If these don't work, come back and we'll continue. I hope this helps you, and please remember to rate this fix when we are finished,

93 HD Sportster 1200 will not start!

Have you tried to bypass the starter button/switch? Use a heavy jumper wire to go between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal. Turn the key to "On" position, make sure "Run/Off" switch is turn on. Make sure bike is in neutral. I've started guys bikes with coat hangers before when they lost had trouble with the starter button. If the bike starter turns over, you'll at least have a place to start looking for the issue. Also you said you checked the battery, what was the voltage?
