I have 2 problems real bad vibration and igniton problems w/crane

I have a 1972 electraglide that i restored. The engine is stock except for a cam and crane ignition. first of all I am going thru coils one after the other. I lose the rear cylinder. The igniton is a crane Hi-4. The first coil lasted about a month. The second about 2 weeks. And my 3rd coil died after a weekend.I have been in contact with Crane tech and they said it may be caused by RF noise in my harness. I don't know what to look for to find this problem. Another problem that may be related is a bad vibration at speeds above 50 mph. The vibration is so bad that my foot won't stay on the floorboard! also my ignition switch stem broke. I suspect from the vibration. I am thinking these problems may be related to each other. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Pls bear with me, how is the charging system? At high rev/RPM, max battery voltage is 14.2? A runaway charging system (with a faulty regulator) would subject the electrical system to higher than normal voltage. The coil would be taking the brunt and therefore fail rather quickly.

Sorry about the vibration, without an onsite/test ride, could be anything from tires, engine mount, exhaust mount andothers.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The vibration is likely a tire or rim problem and can be checked at a reputable tire shop. the RF noise is the same as like if you had a car and an amp installed in it and heard a hum in the speakers this is an example of RF noise. most likely cause is alternator, unshielded wires, or components, make sure the proper boots are over all wiring conections. also sounds like you have an intermintent short someplace in the wiring that is requiring to many amps in the ignition system. You may also try going to a hipro spark wire.

If my 1981 flt has points ignition, then I don't have to purchase a centrifugal advance to convert to electronic ignition. Is this correct?

Hi, Douglas it all depends on the cost of electronic ignition that you purchase most brands use a mechanical advance for cost reasons on some of its models and then offer straight electronic ignition without a mechanical advance for more money if you upgrade to a stock Harley electronic ignition no problem do your homework and find something that you and your wallet are comfortable with check out Crane, Dynatek and Compufire for more information about your issue and free downloads that you will need please visit the websites below, and for specific information or questions, please feel free to contact me at Good luck and have a nice day.

Contact Crane for wiring diagram - although they should have supplied one with the product. You may not have connected the tach wire to the correct output from the ignition module.

Speedometer went out ,tachometer out also, turnsignals and brake lights ,any ideas

I have the exact same problem with my 2004 electraglide Nobody can pinpoint the problem we are having. Sounds to me like its finding a needle in a hay stack. I have been checking every wire I cannot find the short I hate to take it to the shop but it looks like I might not have a choice. Harley has a very poor engineered electrical system it's not designed to handle all the vibration that the motor generates. I hope you have better luck than me

I have a 2001 HD Electraglide classic,at 18,000 mi cam tens, went bad.Local HD shop in my area installed hydraulic cam plate~kit. and supposed to take care of the common problem. now i have 44k and noticed...

Could just be fair wear and tear, Ticking noises can be worn rocker arms but unusual on TC. If bike is well maintained and proper oil services done then wear should not be the problem. Use a steatascope to pinpoint the noise. If lifters are the problem, then noise will be loudest on lifter covers. Lifter roller bearins do fail on TC's.

Need diagram of crane cam HI-4

Go to Crane's website and click on "motorcycle" and then "tech info". Choose the installation instructions for you Crane unit. Make sure you get the model number off the Crane unit and get the correct installation information as Crane makes many different versions of the HI-4 unit.

If you cannot find it, contact me directly at and tell me the model number of your unit (ie. 8-2100). I'll download the proper instruction manual for your and forward it to you directly. This forum limits all file transers to 150kb, much too small for what you need. I'll send you the file as a PDF file.

Good Luck

Im replacing my oil tank on my 1972 harley. do i have to remove the inner primary or can i remove rear wheel and fender to remove and replace?

Neither. You oil tank will come out without removing any of the stuff you mentioned. You must take the rubber vibration mounts off and if you work the tank just right, it'll come out. The manual on the old Shovelheads state that you must remove the tank every other oil change to wash it out due to the clutch debris that gets into the tank. I stock configuration, the oil that oils the primary chain is pumped back into the engine and then into the tank. If you just cannot get it out, take the inner primary off. That's a lot of work though. But, if you got to, you got to.

Good Luck

I have a 2005 Harley Davidson engine in a custom built bike with stock wiring harness. New Crane cams fireball hi4tc ignition module and coil to match. New sensors bought directly from Harley dealer. I...

I would check the coil first and see if it needs replaced .If it's new and you still have reciept ,take and get a replacement coil for the one you bought and make sure your wires coming out of everything have power be tracing the system to see if there might be something shorting.
