I have 2 problems real bad vibration and igniton problems w/crane

I have a 1972 electraglide that i restored. The engine is stock except for a cam and crane ignition. first of all I am going thru coils one after the other. I lose the rear cylinder. The igniton is a crane Hi-4. The first coil lasted about a month. The second about 2 weeks. And my 3rd coil died after a weekend.I have been in contact with Crane tech and they said it may be caused by RF noise in my harness. I don't know what to look for to find this problem. Another problem that may be related is a bad vibration at speeds above 50 mph. The vibration is so bad that my foot won't stay on the floorboard! also my ignition switch stem broke. I suspect from the vibration. I am thinking these problems may be related to each other. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Pls bear with me, how is the charging system? At high rev/RPM, max battery voltage is 14.2? A runaway charging system (with a faulty regulator) would subject the electrical system to higher than normal voltage. The coil would be taking the brunt and therefore fail rather quickly.

Sorry about the vibration, without an onsite/test ride, could be anything from tires, engine mount, exhaust mount andothers.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The vibration is likely a tire or rim problem and can be checked at a reputable tire shop. the RF noise is the same as like if you had a car and an amp installed in it and heard a hum in the speakers this is an example of RF noise. most likely cause is alternator, unshielded wires, or components, make sure the proper boots are over all wiring conections. also sounds like you have an intermintent short someplace in the wiring that is requiring to many amps in the ignition system. You may also try going to a hipro spark wire.

If my 1981 flt has points ignition, then I don't have to purchase a centrifugal advance to convert to electronic ignition. Is this correct?

Hi, Douglas it all depends on the cost of electronic ignition that you purchase most brands use a mechanical advance for cost reasons on some of its models and then offer straight electronic ignition without a mechanical advance for more money if you upgrade to a stock Harley electronic ignition no problem do your homework and find something that you and your wallet are comfortable with check out Crane, Dynatek and Compufire for more information about your issue and free downloads that you will need please visit the websites below, and for specific information or questions, please feel free to contact me at xlch@mail.com. What oil do I use in a 1972 Starcraft Boat? Thank you.

Back during the time these were made, you would be advised to use a 30 HD.
This oil would be appropriate for all use except real cold weather, when a 20W-20 would be better. ( below 40 degrees farenheit)
(Do not use a non-detergent.)
A few years later, the recommendation changed to 10W-30.

Engine in my vxCommodore is Misfiring

If your car is getting fuel, then the igniton system is faulty. Things to check or replace in the order that I would check them are here: They are the coil, igniton module, cam and crankshaft sensors, map sensor. Your car may be out of time due to a broken timing belt/chain, or it may have been loose and jumped a few teeth on their cogs. Check engine timing and condition of belt. These are not all of the igniton components, but the most common items that go bad. The rest of the components and sensors shouldn't cause your car not to start, but affect driveabiliy.

+ I have a 67 corvette with a 327-300hp engine. I had this engine rebuilt back stock except for a high flow oil pump and a higher lift cam. I want to adjust valves. My question is do I adjust valves like...

you would adjust as a normal stock engine, there is no gap spec for this, you will want to just snug rocker arms so they are not sloppy, turn motor over by hand and proceed to adjust each valve. run motor a few to prime lifters and then re-adjust valves as needed. Always soak lifters in oil for a day or two or prime by hand before install, as well as grease bottom of lifters before install on cam lobes

Sounds like the engine can't breath,
make sure pcv valve is good,or oil cap is vented.
your engine is building up pressure and has no where to vent,so it blows the easiest thing, the dip stick

New cam went flat in 30 min. 2nd cam wiped out also cams were crane hydraulic/ break in was followed.

Valve spring seat pressure too high, or valve lash too tight. In some cases a big-lift cam, with a stock set of springs causes coil-bind or "spring-stacking" and that will wipe a cam flat in about 5 minutes. Used lifters on a new cam won't seat properly, causing an uneven wear pattern. Doesnt take much to start a problem on a flat tappet cam, but hydraulics are usually more forgiving that solid lifters.

Vibration through car

If you don't have to be moving to get the vibration then it has to be either something is not balanced properly (torque converter may be bad, front pulley, engine flywheel cracked) or you have a bad mount, causing the vibration from making the engine or trans contact the car body in a place you can't see.
Hard to pinpoint without feeling it myself. I can say for sure it's not the cam belt, unless there's debris stuck to the inside of the cam gear causing the vibration.
