2005 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 65k mi Symptoms 1,Noticed white mist/smoke vapor coming from the exhaust pipe. Smelled like coolant, did not really look like smoke. 2.Check engine light/Misfire in cylinder #4. 3.Cylinder 4 plugs were wet and smelled like coolant. (assumed head gaskets) 4.Checked all 8 cylinders for pressure leak down and all 8 held steady as a rock for about 5 minutes with no loss in pressure at all. (now assume intake manifold gasket first, and head gasket second) 5. Radiator has a slow leak that is visible and different than loss of coolant going into cylinder 4. 6.I replace 1 gallon of coolant every 4-5 days. 7. As long as I replace coolant, no real over heating issues. 8.Heater only gets hot when the truck is in motion driving forward, blows cold air when sitting at a light etc. (thermostat as well?) I would hate to spend the money for head gaskets only to find out it did'nt fix the problem. Can a blown head gasket causing leaking into cylinder 4, still hold pressure during a leak down test? Besides Head gaskets, Manifold gasket, what else could this be? Any help solving this one is much appreciated.
One of the gaskets has blown at a point where the a water jacket is blowning into the cylinders but not mixing with an oil jacket on the heads. Try to use some Bars Leak and see if you can get it to seal and if not, their are also aluminum shavings mixed with sealer for some of the worse problems. If it seals you will then know that it will need a gasket replacement at some point

selecting replacement engines- check for 5yr-50000 warranty, not knowing location, two known- spokane, wa. sacramento, ca. there are mail order establishment that offer these, just make sure of warranty cover replacement labor fort total time warranty is in time, also make sure that, if a problem is not cured, they will supply replacement engine-labor. remember it is your dollars, you should be in control
SOURCE: coolant leak
More than likely it is coming from the intake manifold. You can use a pressure tester that hooks to the radiator and use a flashlight and mirror to get a better look at where it is coming from.
SOURCE: service engine soon light keeps coming on. Now low coolant light
I would start by doing an oil change myself so you can examine the oil and look for water/antifreeze in it. You will be able to see it separate from the oil and you can smell the antifreeze. If there is then you have a leak between the water jacket and the heads somewhere. More than likely the LOWER intake gasket is leaking into the head. You said they replaced a gasket but was it the UPPER or LOWER? If it was the LOWER did they use RTV in the correct areas? Did they torque the intake bolts to the correct pressure and install the bolts correctly? I know you don't have these answers but these could all be part of the problem. It may be leaking more at #2 cylinder and causing it to foul more than the others. Also just because a mech pressurized the coolant system and didnt see any change in pressure (hopefully he wasn't just looking for visible leaks) the issue may not happen until the engine is hot, as metals behave differently when heated, especially aluminum which the LOWER intake is made. Have a mechanic or mechanically inclined friend (gearhead) remove the #2 plug wire, then kick the engine a few times without starting it, enough to let any fluid get into the chamber, this would include gas btw. Then remove the plug and look for any wet residue on the plug, gas will evap. quickly, antifreeze/oil won't. again try to smell the residue and if necessary, lightly touch some to your tongue, antifreeze has a sugary sweet taste that is easily detectable. Remember any time you are working with chemicals such as waste oil and especially anti freeze, minimize spills and clean them up quickly and completely and place the spent fluid in a sealable container and take them to a collection center for disposal. Waste oil is a carcinagin (cancer causing) agent and antifreeze (glycol) new or old will kill any animal (child, dog, cat, etc) that ingests it. Many auto parts stores and some other retailers that sell oil and antifreeze will take your wastes if you bought the replacement fluid from them, check before you buy.
may be oil feed to cylinder head replace gasket

As you've stated driving around town it's fine, and everything is working well. For the symptoms, there are 2 possible causes:
1. Your cooling fans are not working.
2. Your radiator needs to be replaced.
I'm sure you can determine which it is, and I wish you luck on your repair.

I forgot to mention that I changed the oil and examined the old oil looking for anything that would indicate coolant, including smell, milky look, cloudy, etc. Old oil looked and smelled like....old oil.
