This May Have A Mechanical Tach . If It Is It Could Be A Cable Problem. If It Is Electric. The Signal For The Tach Originates At The Alternator Via Voltage Regulator.

Naw, we have tried everything and even plugged the wires ourselves and tested every single one individually to see if the circuit was okay. Everything was good until we tried to run something through the switch. In which case, there was no circuit, aka infinite resistance. So we just want to go around the switch and take the switch off the bike.

But we don't know precisely how to get around it. It's a 1980, if it were any other model we could buy parts but they don't manufacture them anymore sadly. Not the important ones, anyway.

Is there a fuse for the tachometer?

Most vehicles power the tach from the same circuit as the other instruments. So if the speedo and fuel gauge work the tach probably has power. May not have a ground signal from the engine computer.
