HELP my 96 Nissan Maxima WON'T START!

My starter was going dead in my car, I know this because i had to tap on it in order for the car to start. Eventually the starter stopped functioning and I had to replace it. When I started to take te old starter out there was a spark arc. I forgot to disconnect the battery! Then I unhooked the positive side of the battery, and replaced the starter. Hooked everything back up and NOTHING! The car wouldn't start. I checked ALL of my fuses they are all good, recharged the battery, installed a brand new ignition switch tested my connections from the battery to the starter (all good), all lights come on when the ignition is turned but I get NO power from the ignition to the starter! What is causing my car from not starting?

Check at the starter for a fuseable link wire as well as at your fuse panel for a possible blown fuse or a bad relay

SOURCE: 1995 Nissan Maxima won't start, not battery.

You may have bad solenoid, starter/battery/solenoid connections, or gound.

Check voltage at starter solenoid when somebody turns key to start. That is where the starter switch, or relay, sends the voltage to pull in the solenoid coil through small wire. I think the solenoid is on the starter for this car, but it may be separate. Autozone has an excellent web site with car-specific repair guides and instructions. You should see 12V at solenoid every time the key is turned to start.

Check big power cable to starter that runs direct from the battery for tight connections. If you have a separate solenoid, then another big cable runs from it to starter. A loose or bad connection could be the culprit. Also check starter mount bolts. They need to be tight for a good solid electrical ground. You also need good ground from frame to engine. Its a long shot, but sometimes the ground straps come loose or burn. You can easily check this by measuring resistance between engine block and negative battery terminal. It should be zero or darn near zero (less than 1 ohm ?).

The solenoid is really a heavy duty swich to handle the high amp load to the starter. It works by a coil that pulls in the big switch. The coil operates from the starter switch and needs onlyt low current and small wire. If the coil wires burn up or there is a bad connection, it won't work. Hope this helps.

You may have a bad ignition switch. The contacts in it "turn on" several different things at once.

Dead battery? Check voltage, try to jump start Start it. If it does not start, listen to see if fuel pump comes on. If it does then check starter. Try tapping on it with a rubber malet to see if it starts. If it does, replace starter.

1996 nissan maxima is eating cylanoid switches

If "tapping" the SOLENOID ever worked... you
HAVE A DEFECTIVE SOLENOID.

Defective is all inclusive... and when "STUFF"
happens (burns up)... it is VERY LIKELY to cause
COLATERAL damage...

(FRIED WIRES & IGNITION SWITCH)
((fix that "STUFF" later)).

At the SOLENOID ... apply "B" battery DIRECTLY
to the "S" terminal of the SOLENOID...

IF it does not fully spin up the starter 100% of the time
the solenoid or the starter is DEFECTIVE.

My 95 maxima was just cuttn out on me and would go dead but usually move battery cables a little and it would crank, however we changed cable ends on battery, crank it and dtove doen the road, it went dead...

Battery went dead? If this is the case you probably have a dead short.Should pull starter possibly bad solinoid, My old Maxima had caused me similar issue, if you pull starter it usually can be tested at a local Auto parts store. In a vehicle that fails to start, the common problems are the starter solenoid and the starter motor. The starter assembly can be quickly pulled from a 1995 Nissan Maxima, and then can be further separated to replace one part of the starter assembly. The process does not require any special tools, and can be done by novice mechanics

Probably a bad starter or battery. Is battery old? Any corrosion?

Tap on the starter - then try and start the car. To find the starter follow the big cable from the positive/red terminal on your battery to the starter.

96 Nissan Maxima. Has new starter. Wouldn't

Did you have the new starter tested befor you installed it? Was their a lot of corosion on the battery cables? The cables might be corroded as well cousing too much resistance for the starter to crank.
