I have a 97 fxd, when started it runs great. Once it warms up it starts running like ****, spitting, sputtering, and backfireing. I have replaced spark plugs, wire, ignition coil, module, and cam sensor.

Hi ............ once it warms up the problems start ? Have you had the carb off lately ? Is it one of the last of the Evo carb models ?

Could be one of the manifold rubbers/gaskets, horrid design on these, all rubber flanges and gaskets, cheap to fix though.

Since you have thrown the entire ignition system at it, let's think about fuel. If you were running out of gas it would act as you described. I would start by removing the float bowl. Be careful not to spill any gas because we want to look at the level. It should be over half full. Check the float movement. You should be able to push it up without resistance. Looking from the bottom remove the phillips screw that retains the float axle and the float and needle valve should fall out. If the needle valve has three sides or if the rubber tip is worn, replace it. The 3 sided valves have a tendancy to stick closed and all dealer stock should be the 4 sided version by now. After you re-install the float, leave the bowl off and follow the small vacuum hose from the petcock to the carb. Pull it off at the carb end. Look to make sure it isn't damaged. **** lightly (sorry) or use a vacuum pump on the hose. With the petcock on and gas in the tank, a healthy stream of fuel should pour from the needle valve. If not, the petcock diapragm is shot. If none of this helps, take it for a ride and when it acts up, crack the fuel cap loose and if it takes off the vent in the cap is malfunctioning.

To me it seem more like a rich condition not a lean like you would get from a rubber or gasket before you buy the rubbers or gaskets i would pull the carb apart, take the slide out and look down where the needle goes into the jet see if the the hole is oval, also make sure the choke is not stuck open

After start it backfires, sputters then runs

Hi,when starting bike you put the chock on,remeber this is to make a richer mixture for cold start,so when you start the bike put put the choke off a little bit as it warms up,other wise wat you are doing is couseing it to floud,so again as the bike warms up put the choke off little bit at a time, all the best.

What makes the bike spit and sputter then get full power for a bit then go back to spit and sputtering

check your shutoff valve on the tank you might have a small piece of junk blocking it inside your tank...easy way to tell is when you have loss of power stop and shake bike side to side

Starts but takes a very long time to warm up. continually stalls when throttle applied. have to keep feathering throttle to keep running . spits ,sputters , backfires until fully warmed up

ColdI engines require a richer mixture to operate smoothly...so they have an enricher (aka choke).
If you are finding you need to keep the choke on longer.....you may have a lean mixture than normal.nother
Start by inspecting the carb and intake manifolds for any leaks (loose fittings....cracked hoses) that could be drawing in air, leaning the mixture.

Another common issue with bikes that have sat over winter...is plugged idle jets.....the fuel varnishes the tiny orifices in the carb. You could try a product like Seafoam in the fuel tank....run it abit to get the treated fuel in the carbs then let it sit overnight...allowing time for the chemical to work. Since the bike runs fine warm...this may clear things up for you.

It runs fine in the summer when temps are warm, but when it turns cold, especially when you first crank it up, it spits and sputters and will not run. It like its not get gas

PUT A SCANNER ON IT AND CHECK THE TEMP READING FOR THE COMPUTER IT IS MORE THAN LIKLY BAD LIKE IF ITS 40 OUTSIDE THE SENSOR IS READING 90 SO IT DOESNT GIVE IT THE EXTRA FUEL IT WOULD NEED WHEN COLD

Sputtering at low speeds and takeoff

your low speed jets are stopped up ,the carbs need cleaning, go to walmart a buy some SEAFOAM, poor it in your gas tank ,start it up on choke, and when it start ot clear up take it off of choke, or ride it until it clears up. after it starts running good get it synchronized
