Hi ..... Charge the battery fully, take a reading (good battery 12.5 - 12.8) and start the bike, Place a multi meter across the battery, with the bike running it should show a reading of 13.2 - 14.2. If the system is charging then it's your battery .............. least time I've had out of one was exactly one year of use on a Harley, eight days out of the warranty period. If you leave the battery overnight then take a second reading in the morning, it'll tell you if it 'bleeds' overnight or at rest. If you've got extras like heated grips, radio etc, make up a simple test bulb with two leads, disconnect negative lead and place one lead onto negative lead and second onto frame. If bulb glows or illuminates when ignition is off you have something the wrong side of the ignition draining the battery.
Good Luck ! ............ let us know how you get on.

Check the voltage of the fully charged battery. It should be around 12.1-12.5V. Start the bike and check again, it should be around 13V (higher than when not running). If not I would suspect the charging circuit. If is at the higher figure I would suspect your battery is faulty/shot

I have a 2004 Honda vtx 1300c and the speedometer quit working. I checked the battery connections and the fuse and they are fine. All the other lights and the odometer on the dash work. The speedometer...

its the speed sensor The Speedo sensor has a little plastic coupler that is driven off the hex head of the bolt that holds your countershaft sprocket on. If the countershaft sprocket bolt has backed off,it could've damaged that coupler. Or the plastic coupler has simply stripped out from working against that steel bolt head. Unbolt the Speedo sensor(it's just two little bolts)and remove it,see if the hex shape of the coupler is rounded out,or if the hex shape of the sprocket bolt is rounded. Either of these could give you erratic readings. If the bolts that hold the countershaft sprocket cover are loose,or the bolts that secure the Speedo sensor are loose, these too could cause an erratic Speedometer reading.

Speedometer on motorcycle quit working

Have you had the front wheel off recently?

There is a magnetic speedometer sensor at the front wheel that is easily and often broken if not aligned property. Replacing that magnetic sensor should cure it.

Also, there is a wiring harness under the speedometer. Remove the 3 bolts holding on the speedometer, and carefully lift it up and check to make sure the harness is plugged together tightly.

Sounds like the battery may have a bad cell. The reason it quits dying is that there isn't enough juice in the battery to fire the plugs. On older pull start vehicles the stator put out the power to run the coils. On atv's with batteries, the power output is sent to the battery, and then to everything else. If the battery is bad or just dead, it eats up the current and leaves nothing to run the motor. The dash lights go out because it completely drains all current until even those lights go out. Once the motor quits runnung, there is enough current to get those lights back on again. Hope this helps...

Battery light on and firing on three cylinders

ah the old 5G2 nice bike.

if sat around for a year the battery will be shot, so it will not take a charge or hold it, that may be why the warning light.

after a year idle the carb jets will gunge up,

might you have no spark because the battery is so flat?

a year laid up... why.? did it have a fault then? carb diaphragms don't like being laid up, nor carb slides, one may be stuck in the old petrol residue.

think I'd be tempted to try a new battery, and if not charging, the regulator probably packed up, beware though, a shot regulator can feed ac through to the battery rather than DC, and it will bust your new battery. loads of people fall for that one.

Sounds like you battery is shot. Could your battery have been exposed to below freezing weather while not fully charged?? If so you likely froze it this winter and have buckled the plates, If that's a possibility replace it.
