No this is a common Chevy blazer problem. by default blazers are rear wheel drive and there's a drive shaft that comes from the transmission in the front of the truck to a trans axle in the rear which drives the rear wheels. now the drive shaft is in two pieces connected by a universal joint that bends almost like a spinning elbow this like most other car parts beings to wear and you get the clunking when you push the pedal and it starts spinning. Dont worry your transmission is fine its only the drive shaft which is less serious to fix. and its safe to drive and will last many many miles. My 94 blazer has 475,315 on it. and the same clunk started at 100,000 and she is still running strong. For peice of mind go to a shop that you trust and they will know exactly what you are talking about and tell them to take a look at your drive shaft and universal join. remember these trucks last forever mine is all stock with that many miles on it. unless you blow your engine or win the lottery dont get rid of it becuase im telling u they dont make em like they used to. if you want more information feel free to email me. It is a stripped or broken shell if you lose rev, 2nd, and 4th

I have done oodles of them. 1993 4L60E and up have this problem

They are in all the half ton GM trucks, s10, Blazers, camaro, firebird, jimmy, bravada, escalade, etc.

SOURCE: 2001 chevy blazer

It is inside the transmission. It is called a reaction sun shell, it strips out, which causes the grind noise your talking about.

2002 Chevy SC1 1500. 64,000 miles. Went to put in reverse, engine made a clunk sound and then whined. Now reverse will not work but just whines when put in that gear. Drive works normally. Any ideas?

Are you sure you have all the forward gears?(4speeds ,three shifts)This is a common problem with this transmission and it is almost always a broken reaction shell. The shell brakes due to a diagnostic code setting and putting the trans into a high pressure setting and braking the shell. It is possible that you have a problem n the reverse input clutches but this is rare.Eithe rway the transmission will need to be removed and diasssembled.Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Transmission issue, when in reverse heard a clunk, then a whining sound....later there was no reverse...2001 chevy blazer I had the exact same thing happen just today on a 2000 Chevy Blazer. Two weeks...

The loss of 2nd 4th and reverse is a common failure on the 4L60E. What happens is the reaction shell has separated from the sun gear. Often a whole transmission is cheaper simply because the remanufactured unit from GM are reasonably priced and the warranty is 3yr 100,000 miles.
