Loose shifter arm on the transmission

What is the fix and do you have to remove the inner primary cover for the fix

  • r8rfan Jan 09, 2009

Have the same problem. I have tried to tighten the bolt but that didn't work. In fact it got worse. Now it is difficult to get the gears to engage. I was told to remove the primary or to take everything out of the transmission to fix it. Is there somewhere I can find a manual for the transmission?

To remove that arm, the inner primary must come off, but try this first:
About 75% of the time, just replacing that allen screw will solve the problem. Don't just tighten it, replace it. Make sure the arm is slid all the way on the splines. The screw usually doesn't loosen, it stretches.

You must pull both inner and outer primary, then the top cover to the tranny. After all of this has been removed, you can get to the shifter cam and pawls, and replace. I have done a few of these. The splines wear down and then just simply turn back and forth.

Once that arm gets loose you are done for, you might get away tightening it but you are best off replaceing it yes the primary has to be removed and the starter needs to be un fastened at the starter shaft and at the starter where it fastens to the tranny but when your done the trouble is gone and the shifter fixed

My 1999 fxstb night train will start but wont gears engage

If the gears will not engage check to see if the gear shifter linkage from the foot pedal to the arm that goes down behind the primary moves. It that all moves and the arm is snug on the shifter arm behind the primary you likely have a broken shifter arm assembly. These arms fail where they are welded to the pawl mechanism inside the transmission. If it is indeed broken you will have to pull the complete primary, clutch etc and the bearing race on the mainshaft and then the cover off of the transmission and pull the clutch release cover etc off and then pull the transmission cassette from the transmission case and then you can access and replace the shifter arm/pawl assembly.

Harley problems

If you mean the shifter arm that is attached to the shifter shaft that exits the transmission behind the primary case then if you cannot loosen and remove the allen socket screw in the shifter arm and work the arm off of the shaft and another arm back onto the shaft etc then you will have to remove the primary inner case and outer cover etc.

My super glide won't downshift all the time

Check the integrity of the shifter parts from the foot pedal to the shifter arm that goes down behind the primary case. If all of this is connected and not extremely loose check to see if the shifter arm is loose on the shifter shaft down in behind the primary case. If that is loose you might be able to tighten it and/or install a new screw with a 1/4 long ball extension adapter. If the splines are damaged that will not correct the situation and you will need to remove the primary case to access for further repairs. If the arm seems to be tight on the shaft and it is turning, moving, without shifting gears you could have a broken weld on the shifter shaft to pawl mechanism and will have to remove the transmission cassette assembly to access tit for replacement etc. HOWEVER in this case you should have no shifting at all and if you can shift but sometimes not you more likely have a shift drum or shift fork or shifter (dog) ring problem which will also require transmision cassette removal, inspection and repairs.

My 2005 road king shift shaft on my transmission seems stripped

Could quite well be OR the screw on the shift arm is loose. If you can tighten it with a ling 1.4 inch ball Allen okay but if not you will need to pull the primary cover and the inner primary case to get at the shift shaft and if it is stripped you will need to pull the transmission cassette to get the shifter pawl and shaft assembly out. The weld on the pawl assembly alos breaks and then when the shifter arm turns the shaft the pawl doe not turn. This also requires transmission disassembly to repair.

Shifter diagram

What part is loose? If it is the arm on the shift rod you might be able to get a long 1/4 ball allen in behind the primary case and tighten it or get a new bolt installed and tightened but if the arm or the shaft serrations are worn you will need to pull the inner and outer primary to install a new arm and pull the trans gear set out to change the shift rod.

Trans, shifting arm will it come off with out hitting side case

If you're talking about the short arm that clamps onto the shifter pawl shaft back at the transmission, no, it will not come off in most cases. I have had people say that they have gotten them off but I've never been that lucky. The inner primary cover usually has to come off to replace this arm. If it's too loose, the shifter pawl shaft may need replacing as well as the splines could be worn too badly. In this case, it's a major job as the trapdoor of the transmission has to be pulled to replace that shaft.

Good luck

Removal of inner primary cover

For the cover you may have to loosen your shifter linkage to be able to remove it from the bike depending on what model you have
As for the inner primary you'll have to take off the clutch the front & rear primary sprockets and chain. You can loosen the bolts to both sprockets, then loosen the chain tensioner.
Slide the front & rear sprocket & chain off with the clutch still attached. leave them together and set it aside as one big unit.
The inner primary has bolts with bent washer tabs. Bend the tabs flat so you can remove the bolts.
Thre is a lock ring around the transmission shaft that holds the inner primary on too. Remove that with lock-ring plier.
Depending on your model, you may have to remove the rotor/flywheel first before the inner primary comes off.
Don't for get to put a new engine o-ring back on the front hole of the inner primary when re-installing.

Shift lever at transmission stripped. can it be removed and replaced without inner and outer primary removal

No, you must remove the inner primary to replace the shift lever. But, that may not be the end of your problem. Usually, when this happens, the splines on the end of the shifter pawl shaft are too worn to allow even a new lever to tighten up. Simply replacing the lever will only temporarily fix the problem. I fix the problem correctly, you must replace the shifter pawl shaft. This requires a teardown of the transmission. Good Luck.
